Just wanted some input on when to start my almost 5 month old on rice cereal. I have been told many things regarding when to start rice cereal when breastfeeding and just wanted to hear opinions.

The recommended age right now is 6 months. It had been 4, but it was causing problems in some babies and has been bumped up.

Baby is ready for solids if they can sit (with a little help) and don't have the tongue reflex (pushing out food). Some this is 4 months, others 7 months. Whatever you do start with, start slow, 'tastings' really, rather than feedings, and try mixing breastmilk into the puree or oatmeal or rice cereal instead of water for added nutrients.

Did you know that baby's first food does not have to be a commercial infant rice cereal?

Many pediatric resources are acknowledging the fact that avocado, banana and sweet potato make great first foods for baby. We prefer fruits and veggies first. Ask Your pediatrician about fruits and veggies instead of cereal. Read Rice Cereal Can Wait to learn about the new thinking from the AAP.

My daughter started having it at 4 months. If you think your child needs it then start giving it to them. You're their mum, do what YOU think is right

if you feel the little one's not getting enough with just breast milk then yep, start cereal

They say 6 months but if you think your bub is ready then when ever you feel comfortable my daughter hated rice cereal so she had mushy weetbix you can make it with warm water or your breast milk
