The THC in marijuana DOES cross the placenta and passes on to the baby. It will not cause birth defects, but there are very real concerns that it affects the baby's brain and nervous system development. Research has shown that babies exposed to marijuana while in their mothers wombs are more likely to exhibit behavioural issues as they get older, such as hyperactivity, attention issues and learning difficulties. Babies also tend to be born underwight, shorter in length. They can also exhibit symptoms of withdrawal, such as tremors, shakes be startled by light or sound, and are probably unlikely to sleep well.

Also keep in mind that THC WILL be present in breastmilk. We all know breast is generally best for baby, but baby's brain and nervous system will be developing rapidly in the first year of their life (and beyond), and that THC crossing over into your breast milk has the possibility of causing learning difficulties and developmental delays.

Sorry for the lecture, but I can't BELIEVE there are people here saying "oh, it's ok to have a smoke of weed every day while you are pregnant". Grow up people, this is the life of a baby you are talking about. It is NOT okay.

If you are going to keep smoking weed, then there isn't much anyone can do about that BUT don't tell yourself it is okay and it isn't affecting the baby in some way. Don't lie to yourself. Maybe your baby WILL be fine.....but maybe it won't.

I don't see anybody judging you, Toont. Nobody called you names. Nobody told you you were a bad mother. Nobody called your character into question.

They simply said that smoking anything while pregnant is a bad idea.

And it is.

That's medical fact. There's no judgment about it.

Being non-judgmental doesn't always mean blowing smoke up someone's ass and telling them that what they're doing is good. If I wanted to take up knife-juggling, and people said, "Um, Krista, that's not very safe, and you could really hurt yourself," then that's not being judgmental. That's being truthful.

my sister smoked pot while pregnant with her son. i don't know how much or how often. all i know is that her son was born almost 6 weeks early (obviously we don't know if the pot caused it, but we don't know if it didn't cause it either), AND DHS got involved because he had THC in his system. i say it's a stupid thing to do, why risk getting your child taken from DHS, and him being born early ,and all the other things that COULD happen by smoking while pregnant. it's not worth it.

So "TOONT", if you admit that it was a mistake, then how come you're getting pissed off and defensive at the people who agree that it was a mistake, and being all sweet to the one person who is telling you that it's just fine to smoke weed while pregnant?

I'm allergic to smoke, so I wouldn't smoke while pregnant.

I would urge you to quit cuz it's not worth the potential risk to your child. Good luck!

i would google it then, and ignore anything that sounds crazy. norml is the legalize pot website, so somewhere they must have archives with info.

yep. that's what i think, basically. but it's just a question of how much smoke is being inhaled. it has to be more than, say, a bowl a day to block oxygen.

oh no i'm not going to overdue it that was my last time and i just looked at the half that is left and it wasnt even pot in the bluntville it was just paper now wonder i didnt feel high lol so now my baby then inhaled that and i didnt even get no type of enjoyment of it smh never again and besides thats being selfish if i continue to smoke but sometimes pot is the thing that makes my nausea go away thats the sad part..

it's a matter of quantity. traces will stay for up to a month, but not at levels that make an impact. if you're smoking cigarettes all day, it is going to block oxygen, but the amount of smoke we're talking about really isn't enough to block enough oxygen to be harmful. plus pot doesn't have all the shit chemicals that commercial tobacco has. don't overdo it, you'll both be fine.

i don't know how long it takes to leave the body. but really, don't feel bad. i think that scientists think that it does not crosses the barrier into the placenta, so you don't really have anything to worry about. i personally feel it's the best way to treat nausea. and i know lots of other moms who feel the same. its medicine. pure and simple

oh no i don't smoke that much lol especially no cigarettes i was worried and outta all the people i talked to you made me feel better...i didn't know it depends on how much you smoked that cut off the oxygen i thought if you smoked anything it cut the oxygen off...and trust me only little was used after that my nausea went away but now today im dealing with it again :(

if you smoke a dozen cigarettes every day, yeah, you ARE going to block oxygen, but really, a couple puffs of pot every couple days or even every morning really is not going to hurt. i would just keep it as little as needed, only when you're feeling sick. it's been being used for at least 5000 years for treating nausea. you're not the first. ;)

toont, don't worry about the pot, really. i know dozens of women who continued to smoke a little bit just to control how incredibly uncomfortable pregnancy is. consider that anti-nausea pill given to pregnant women in the 50's and 60's that made all their babies have flippers. that's never happened with pot.

I smoked cigarettes during both of my pregnancies and both my babies were calm quiet babies that both slept amazingly well, so they didnt have any type of withdrawels. Just a suggestion, I cut down dramatically on the amount I was smoking and the strenght as well.

every mom should quit smoking cigarettes the second she finds out she's pregnant. they severely cut down on oxygen and nutrients getting passed to the fetus. keep the marijuana at medicinal usage levels. it is excellent for morning sickness and some studies show it helps neurons form better protective sheathing. plus they don't think it really passes the placental barrier. another note on the cigarettes, babies are fussy enough, i couldn't imagine having one born addicted to nicotine and then go through withdrawals its first weeks of life. that does not sound like fun to me.
