My fiance keeps freaking out over the fact that our one year old son doesn't yet know how to walk on his own, and knows only five words.
He had his first two words down at 7.5 months old (mama, and dada). Soon after, he learned Nana (my MIL), Bubba (what my fiance calls him), and boo (from peek-a-boo). He's also been working on anma (Grandma, for my mom). He will also try to mimick words that we say, but he hasn't gotten any down, even if we repeat them for a few months (like kitty, doggie, cup, etc.). Oh, and he makes the pitches for "uh-oh!" but doesn't actually say it.
As for walking, he's done the hand holding bit since 3 months. He had his first steps at 7.5, but it happened in a lunging kind of fashion. He still does the cruising thing, which he loves, but won't walk out in the open without a hand, and we only just got him to take just the one. He'll reluctantly take the two or three steps between us, but only a couple of times, and won't go anywhere else, unless there is something to hold on.

lol, That's too cute! And maybe he doesn't want to learn any new words; the ones he has seems to serve him well, LMAO!!!

Yeah, he babbles all the time, just won't learn any new words.
As for the walking, he woke up today and apparently it clicked. He walked from his room to ours without any help. Took him to my mom's and he spent the entire time walking (and running, scary) while toting around a camera case.

Give your fiance a big hug and tell him to calm down. (Mine freaks out too sometimes over things!) And then tell him that you think it's great that he cares so much.

As for you, I wouldn't worry too much about it yet. He's trying to talk, but it's a lot of work! Chatter back at him about your day and what you see and stuff like that and he'll pick it up. As for walking,it sounds like he's making slow but steady progress, so just keep up your work, be patient and loving, and maybe bribe him with some toys, lol. If it's that stressful to you two, see a doctor about it and make absolutely sure there's nothing developmentally wrong with him, though it sounds as though he's just taking things at his own pace.

My daughter didnt start walking until she was 15months old, and as for talking my daughter didnt start talking until she was almost 2, but she also had problems with her ears.... Does your son have problems with his ears with fluid built up in them? If he does I would suggest having him see something like Early Interventions they helped my daughter out a lot she is almost 4 and her speech isn't were I would like it but its getting there

Hi Jenni!
My daughter was very similar to your son! She didnt so much have a problem with the walking...but she really started to scare me when she wouldn't really talk and didnt seem to even try! Then one day right before she turned 2 it was like someone flipped a switch inside of her and she was talking full sentences! It's almost like they just sit back and listen and absorb everything around them and just all of a sudden put it all together and then never stop from there! If it's really something thats bothering you then ease your fears and take him to see a Dr and maybe they have some helpful suggestions as well.....

Hi Jenni,

I work in childcare and see children who find their feet at 18months, I think he'll walk in his own time, when he's ready, Until then just give him lots of encouragement and assistance.... Maybe try toys that encourage him to stand, hold, and push! i find that the young kids like the 4 wheeled bikes, they hold onto the back and walk along with them... Do you have a jolly jumper? They're great for building leg strength and stability... If your really concerned maybe you should talk to your doctor or nurse at his next visit... But i bet he'll just surprise you sometime very soon by the sounds of it and take the plunge... As for his speech does he babble? usually between 7 and 12months he'll babble away trying out new tone's getting ready to talk and then between 13 to 18months he'll start to use more than one word and try out different pitches... but again all babies are different theres no gaurentee(sorry about spelling)... i hope this helps.. remember always consult your doctor or child health nurse if your concerned...
