How did you, as adoptive couples, promote your family?

[deleted account] ( 7 moms have responded )

We have been waiting for over two years now with our current agency. We are trying to find creative ways to let people know we want to adopt again. We are in need of some fresh ideas. We would really love to adopt again before our son gets too much older!

Thanks moms!

First, I think you should be up front with your agency and see if there is some reason you don't have a child, yet. Let them know you are going to speak with another agency. Next, if you will only take an infant, good luck. Finally, as a parent who has adopted from the foster care system, I know there are hundreds of kids out there waiting for homes and families, and they don't cost anything--in fact, they come with support subsidies that are tax-free. There are some cautions, but you should at least check it out.

We waited 3 years for our oldest son. We are in Canada, however, where it is not legal to "advertise" that you are looking to adopt. We did ensure all family and friends knew of our wish to adopt in case they knew someone looking to place a child for adoption so they could refer them to the agency we were registered with.

On the other hand, with our twins (adopted in 2008) we only waited a month and a half so things evened out for us after our long wait with our oldest.

Hang in there. I know its tough waiting and I totally sympathize with you. Keep busy in the meantime.

Quoting Robyn:

Thank you Vickie. We have talked about that quite a bit. We are also considering adopting older children that are legally free. The hardest part is the financial end. Our first adoption was $17,000. The agency with are with now only takes 10% of our annual income which is considerably less....and yet, maybe that's why the wait has been so long!

Brightsides for Children & Families (located in Amherst, MA) is an excellent agency that handles both domestic & foreign adoptions.  I never heard of an agency that takes a percentage of your annual income before.  Usually, there are different fees along the way, the application fee being the first one.  Good luck to you, Robin.

Check our adoption facilitators, I found a few websites such as butterfly babies (not sure of the exact URL). They do tend to have AA babies or babies with disabilities ( varied range) but if you are open they may be able to help. Also put up "business cards" in grocery stores, etc. The more you get out there the more you will find. Best of luck to you

Our agency has suggested YouTube videos as a new medium. Not sure what your agency allows. Our agency is also a national agency so our profiles are seen by so many more people. Good luck!

Two years is a long time to wait. Foreign adoptions usually don't take more than 9 months or slightly more. Maybe it's time to seek another agency?
