I have a 2yo son that sucks his thumb almost all the time and a 3yo daughter who sucks the middle two fingers all the time as well. Children do this as security, often more fequently in times of stress. I have not found a sollution but they will out grow this, I have recieved critisim from other about hygiene and my childrens teeth. My children are not consistenlt unwell and the dentist said no problems shoulp occur. for now I just let them go because the more u ask them not to suck the more they do it!

my step son did this from the time that my bf and me got together, and almost 3 years later i have finally got him to stop (except when he go's with his mom for her visitation) I got him to stop, because I told him to. Over and over, and over, and over, and over. I found that most** of the time that he did it he had no idea he was doing it, he just was zoning out and stuck them in his mouth. He has also been a VERY sick child, constantly getting sick, which I would assume would be from touching everything, and then sticking his nasty germ filled hands straight into his mouth... makes sense. He is now 4 1/2 and went to the dentist last month, and we where told that from him doing it for so long his adult teeth WILL need braces, which are not only painful but very expensive. A big price to pay for not wanting to break a child of a nasty habit if you ask me. I feel bad for him, and other kids whos parents dont make it a point to stop them of this or give up.

my son is also 2 years old and often sucking his fingers. I gave him lot of snacks, drawing books and pencils. Thank god, it can reduce his bad habit

not sure if this will work or if you ladies have tried it. But in Australia we can buy this stuff that ppl put on their nails to stop biting them. its not bad for you but it tastes horrible! maybe if you put some of that on them it might deter them? Im not sure where you get it from. Chemists could possibly have it.

My son does the same thing and I can't get him to stop either. He also has a blankie. I also am at a loss as to how to get him to stop. I'm thinking he will just outgrow it.

I have the same problem...she sucks her middle two fingers, but usually only right before bed. I haven't been able to find a successful way to stop it either, the closest I ever came was to reward her when she didn't do it, but that only lasted about 2 weeks. However, I have been told you can buy stuff to put on their nails (kind of like the bitter apple stuff for dogs). They say the bitter/sour taste usually makes them stop, but I have heard that some kids just suck or wipe it off and others enjoy the taste. Quite frankly I don't really want to try that method. So any other "natural" solutions would be great.

On the plus side, both our dentist and doctor said it shouldn't do any harm to their teeth or development and they should outgrow it by age 5!
