Separation Anxiety

Dianna - posted on 01/29/2009 ( 3 moms have responded )

How many other April babies out there are going through separation anxiety? I am a stay at home mom and he is with me all the time and yet just recently he has started the separation anxiety stage where if I leave his sight or someone other daddy sits in the back seat of the car he cries or screams. Other than peek a boo any suggestions?

Make sure you teach him about object permanence, i.e. that you still exist even if he can't see you. Speak to him if you leave the room or go out of sight for a while(Mummy's right here, I'll be right back). And always reassure him by coming back when you say you will. Eventually he will learn that Mummy will always come back, and will be less stressed when you leave.

I am going through this as well with my daughter. I can't leave the room without her crying. She only wants to be with me. She doesn't even want to sleep in her crib.

I think this is the age where they go through the phase I like to call "stranger danger".  My daughter is with me 24/7 as well and has seperation anxiety even with my husband (which makes him sad sometimes)  We have a 3year old daughter too, and she went through the same thing.  It's just a phase and will pass.....soon.  I don't think there is anything you can do to change her feelings towards unfamiliar faces.....
