Should we close the door at night?

My husband insists that we have our room door open at night, just so we can hear if the kids are calling us. I hate sleeping with the door open and it is hard for me when we get intimate, I mean, what if the kids walk in on us. My 5 year old step daughter is able to knock the door, my 20 month old son will do the same. I feel that we can keep the kids room door open but close ours. What do you think?

I keep all doors open. I would not close a child's door until he was old enough to open it himself. You could always close the door for the intimacy and then open it again... I want to hear if my children are sick or sleep bad or just everything. Although I think a baby monitor would keep waking me up.
You need to find a solution that works for all of you, so that all a comfortable and safe.
Good luck

We do what the other two ladies do - keep our door open but close the childrens' doors. But I would think it would work both ways - you could keep their doors cracked a little and yours closed and you'd be able to hear them the same as if it was the other way around. Otherwise I would just suggest using a monitor - if you close everyone's doors - so then that way your husband would be able to feel secure knowing he would hear them if they woke up.

Hi, I agree with Brigette. I have 3 kids...5yrs, 3yrs and 20 months and I shut their bedroom doors and leave ours open....we can still here them with their doors closed. We also know when they are up and about as we can hear them opening their doors :)

I think it would be pretty safe to shut your door at night and still hear the children if their rooms weren't too far away. If they aren't within a close distance you could use a baby monitor instead. We actually shut our children's doors so that they don't wake each other up if one is calling or crying out for us (we have two boys, one is 20 months and the other is 4 months old) but we still hear them through the closed doors. Hope this helps :)
