We are having so many problems with my daughters night time sleep. My husband and I are wondering if her 2 daytime naps are keeping her awake at night and we need to drop it to one. How many naps are your babies taking and what is their general sleep schedule (wake, nap and bed times)?
Any input would be appreciated!

I have an 11 monht old daughter. She still takes 2 naps sometimes even 3, but not very often. She usually is sleeping by 8pm and wakes up between 7-8 every day. Her napes are usually 2 hours after she first gets up and then around 1ish. Hope that helps.

My son wakes up between 6am and 7am, then naps around 2 and a half hours after this. He usually has about an hour. He then stays up till about 1pm and goes for his second nap after lunch. This is usually longer - about an hour and a half, it usually works out that he wakes up at around 2.30pm/3pm. He is always ready for bed at 6pm, but try to keep him going if I can, but sometimes it's just not worth it, and he always wakes up at the same time in the morning no matter what time he goes to bed! I am lucky tho, because I can put him in his cot whether it's a nap or bedtime, walk away and he settles himself to sleep.

my daughter turned 11 months old yesterday ans her bedtime is between 8 & 9 and she sleeps until usually 5-6 and she take a 1 hour nap after breakfast and a 2 hour nap around 1:30ish. this seems to work for her so if it makes her happy it makes me happy.

How old is she? We had problems like that too. Brought my son down to 1 nap just before his 1st birthday & it totally helped. My younger daughter has been on 1 nap since about 6 months old (afternoons get really hairy, but had to to juggle both kids myself during the day) and she sleeps ok now during the night- still gets dream feed & wakes between 2 & 5am for another feed.
I know that I can't let my son (he's 2) nap for longer the 2.5 hours or past 2:30pm or we have issues at night.

Hi my son is 11 months old and he only has 1 nap a day, any more than that and he wont sleep at night. we get up and 7.30am have breakfast and then play or go out. he normally naps around midday for a couple of hours. when he wakes up we do different activities together like swimming. we stick to a strict bedtime routine at the same time. dinner followed by a bath a 6pm. a bottle of milk a little while after and he is asleep by 7.30pm. and he sleeps 12 hours straight. and he only stirs if he has teething pains. hope its helpful

My son is 11 months now... He usual wakes up between 9am to 10am... takes a nap between 12pm to 2pm, which usual last 1 1/2 to 3hrs and we put him to bed between 9pm and 10pm... In my opinion two naps are too many for a child. I love an active child that wants to play and not sleep all day especially after 8 months. Plus by 9 or 10 we give him a warm bottle and he’s out cold for the rest of the night.

hi! my daughter usually gets up from 830-1030 everyday... (depending on what time shes up) has a morning nap from 1030-1230... sleeps for about an hour, then an afternoon nap around 2-4... goes to bed at 8-830pm and sleeps all night... but usually naps anywhere from 2-4 hours a day... but like everyone else says, if you are having problems with her awake at night, then cut it down to one... every baby is different ♥

my son is 11 months old. He's already at that stage where some days he only needs/wants 1 nap. Everyone's different. My son wakes up in the AM after 2 hours he takes and early nap before noon for either 30 mins-2 hrs.....generally only 30min-hour....then he will do the same nap routine later in the day before evening. Some days he'll take one nap and get tired and sometimes cranky about 2-3 hours before bedtime. Thats when i keep him occupied until night time so he isn't off schedule. Never wait till the baby is exhausted to put them to sleep. SOmetimes my son will take too late of a nap then before i know it it's his bedtime but he's a good sleep when it comes to bed time so normally thats not an issue for me. Anywho i dont know where im getting at with all this but no matter how much people may say a baby/toddler/child needs to take for naps....i dont listen....you can't force anyone to take a nap. Is a child is in a good mood having fun and just simply wont go down for a nap then obviously they dont need one. If you notice a child is sleepy and wont take a nap of course thats where the parental control comes in and makes them. My child gets it from me i think because im not a nap person, haven't been since i can remember. Babies and children will let you know when their sleepy, either by words or actions.

my daughter doesnt sleep while day or night so i dont know how much my input would help but im gonna give it to you anyways! she refuses to sleep during the day cuz she wants to play! but i usually get her to take a nap after breakfast and a bath so anywhere between 8 and 9. she will usually sleep for anywhere between 5 minutes and 2 hours. then she gets up and plays for a couple hours has lunch and i put a clean diaper on her right before her afternoon nap between 2 and 3. this one is usually shorter then her morning nap. then she will take another nap after dinner so 6 or 7 and goes to bed at 9 or 10. and wakes up two or three times at night. and sleeps till 730.

My son is 11 months now, and he still takes three naps a day...it all depends on what she needs...if my son didnt take three naps...he would be grumpy all day, cause I tired to put him down for two naps, but he wasnt having it, and my 5 year old took 2 naps a day till he started preschool...so it all depends on the baby and what they need

Our little one varies on whether or not he takes two naps. The time change has altered his schedule quite a bit. He wakes up between 6 and 7 and then goes down between 9:30 or 10:30. If his morning nap last for 2-2.5 hours, then he usually doesn't take a second nap. When the nap is only 1-2 hours then he will usually take a second nap around 2:30 or 3:00 that can last 20 min or 1.5 hours; it really depends on how busy he has made himself during the day. Either way we follow the same bed time routine everynight and so he knows when we lay him in his crib it is ni-night time. He generally doens't fight it at all and goes to sleep easy. He usually sleeps from 7:30/8:00 until 6/7am.
We found he had sleep problems earlier (around 5-6 months old) becasue he was sleeping too much during the day or not having enough in his tummy when we put him down. Now that we are more set on nap and meal times it has been much easier on him.

I shortern my chidlrens naps first. My son stopped taking 2 naps just before he turned 2. He would be to tired in the morning and he still occasionally does. He doesn't take longer then an hour when taking 2. I give him 2hrs for nap when he only takes 1. My daughter is going to be 1 soon and I just started shortening hers becasue she'll get up to early so she gets 1hrs nap now.

Thanks for the input everbody!
Wow, a 3 or 4 hour nap sounds like a dream! I wouldn't know what to do with all that free time! Lucky mommies, sigh....
Anyway, it sounds like we're right at that in-between point where she might be ready to do one nap... I think we'll try it and see how it goes. Today she had one good nap and one super short one, then she went to bed earlier than normal and hasn't woken up yet... keeping my fingers crossed as I type ;)
To answer Catherine's questions: She usually wakes about every 30 minutes untill about 1 or 2 am. She eats a good dinner and nurses before bed, so it's not because she's hungry. We don't pick her up, just pat her back untill she goes back to sleep. She sleeps in her crib for most of the night and I will pick her up twice to nurse. The second time I just leave her in bed with me till morning. I have heard good things about the No-Cry books, I think I will order it tonight.
Keep the good advice comming - I'm open to pretty much anything at this point!

Brody Gets up at 8am, goes back down for a nap from 10:30-12:30, Naps again from 3:00 - to about 4:30 and then goes to bed at 9:30. He has slept through the night since he was 12 weeks old, except the one time he had a cold, and when he was teething his top front teeth. For him, if he does not have two naps he is very cranky and sleeps worse those nights, and will wake frequently.

Try everything out and no two babes are the same.

With both of mine we found that "sleep begets sleep' and that they both sleep through night better for good day time sleeps. (I really thought that would be madness but in our case it was not) My 2 1/2 year old still has a good 2 ~ 3 hours in the afternoon. My 11 month son is less sleep hungry, and has two half an hour sleeps during the day.

Do you know why she is waking? Is she wanting food? What do you do when she wakes? Are you co-sleeping or is she in her own cot?

There is all the other usual stuff like leaving the lights off or dimmed when it is night time. Comforting them without picking them up or taking them out of the cot or bed.

The book "No Cry Sleep Solution" is extremely helpful for ideas too.

Good luck!

My son takes 2 naps a day usually 1 hour each, but yesterday took 1 nap that was 2 1/2 hours so he only got one. My lil monkey has sleeping problems and wakes up at least 4 or 5 times per night, but with having one long nap he slept from 8pm-8am...so I am thinking the 1 long nap is the way to go...I guess we will just have to see how it works out. I would say to give the 1 nap a day a try and see how it goes. If she needs more than 1 you will know. Good Luck!!

Hi Anna, my daughter only takes 1 nap a day. She gets up between 8-9 than I put her down for her nap at around 1 and doesnt get up untill between 2-3 i put her to bed between 8:30-9 depends on how cranky she's being, I did notice that if she does take 2 naps she doesn't sleep as good. You should just try it and see what happend, but like everyone says every baby is different. Hope this helped :D

Her 2nd nap is generally at 3 p.m and lasts apprx. 1 1/2 hours. Then she goes her night sleep at 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. We plan to drop day naps to one when she is 18 months but i dont know what she thinks:))

We're having the same problem here. We decided to try dropping to one nap starting today. My oldest dropped his morning nap around 1 year too and started sleeping much better. I know it's early according to the "experts" but every child is unique and it can't hurt to try!

My daughter has been doing one nap a day since she was 8 months old. She started this all on her own and I noticed that she did much better!! It was one of my goals to have her down to one nap by 10 months, but she took that goal from me!! LOL Anyway.. It's usually around a 2 1/2 hour nap, sometimes a little longer. She wakes up around 8am, naps around 1pm-3:30pm or a little later, and then doesn't go to bed until about 9:30 or 10. Yes, she's a night owl. But to me I think that children at this age do way better on one solid good nap rather than 2, just from what I have seen when I did daycare for 2 years. This way they have time to get the rest that they need and can enjoy the rest of their day!! Hope this helps you.

My daughter has just one nap a day. She will sleep for an hour, some time between midday and 2pm. She seems not to want any more. At night she is in bed at around 8pm, and wakes up at 5.30-6am. Up until last week, she also used to wake TWICE during the night for twenty minute breast feeds. The last few nights - finally - she has slept through. She is a very active baby. I imagine that she'd need more sleep, and yet it is her eagerness to be "busy" which seems to keep her awake.

My daughter has weened herself off the extra nap so we are down to one but it usually lasts from about 11-3 then she is up and ready to go with the rest of the crew. She wakes at 6:30-7 in the morning depending on how quiet the other two are when they are getting ready for school and goes to bed at 8:30-9 depending on how cranky she is

My son takes one nap a day. He sleeps from 10am- 2pm. Then he is ready for bed at 7:30pm. If he doesn't take his nap, he becomes extremely cranky. He takes his naps easily and on his own sleeps for 4 hours

My boys still take 2 1-1 1/2 hour naps a day. They wake around 7, go down around 10, back down between 2 & 2:30 and go to bed around 7:30. But if she's having trouble sleeping at night I would absolutely try getting her to 1 nap a day. All babies are different and many are ready to take just one nap a day. Good luck!

Hi Anna, my son still has 2 naps a day lasting from 1 to 1 1/2 hrs each. usually a total of 3 hrs day sleep. He wakes around 7am or 8am and i will put him down for his naps after he has been awake for roughly 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. He then goes to bed at 7 or 8pm and sleeps 11-12 hours at night. He's not ready to drop down to one nap yet as he still gets really grizzly but your daughter may be ready, every baby is different but i did read somewhere that around 12-15 months they are generally ready for one nap.
