We've been in Atl (Roswell acyually) for 6 months. My 10 year old has a birthday coming up. The Zoo and Aquarium are way out of our price range. Any suggestions?

Hi Cassie - welcome to Atlanta! Where did you move from?
There's a couple fun places I can recommend. I've been in Atlanta a long time (grew up here and am now 31 with two children of my own!), so in your area...a few ideas:

-Learning Express store in Alpharetta has a great party room - I just wrote about it and put a short video on my blog:

-The Purple Hippo just down 400 in Sandy Springs has a private play room that you can rent for $20 and looks like tons of fun if your children are into art (I'm planning to check it out myself soon). Note: you also have to pay for each child. But you can get around that by having your guests' parents pay in lieu of a gift.

-'Play' is an indoor play zone for children - the MASSIVE bounce around castles and such. I'm going there this week and will post a note on my blog about it - check it out for more info. We've gone to lots of parties at indoor play gyms (Kangazoom in Smyrna and Monkey Joe's near Atlantic Station are two others) and most have private rooms you can rent. Again, with these you could ask parents to pay for their children to play instead of bringing a gift. Children only cost $3 at the one near me.

-Some YMCAs host parties.

-Your son may be too old, but also check out the Fun Bus ( We just attended a Fun Bus event - it was great! I'll be writing more about that on my blog, as well.

If you think of other ideas, PLEASE let me know! We moms have to stick together when it comes to good ideas! I just recently created another Community on Circle of Moms dedicated to just that. It was literally created just a few days ago, since I've seen a lot of interest by other moms in also learning specifically about fun activities for their children. So please join that group, also, and share your ideas back with us! I'd apprecaite it! That group is called (surprise :) All Aboard Atlanta.

Again, welcome to Atlanta!

There are lots of great places that aren't too expensive. There are a few indoor pools I know of, one in So. Cobb and one in Gwinnett. Not sure those are convenient for you, but would be just as far as the Zoo or Aquarium. ESPN Zone has $1 all you can play in the arcade on Sat. and Sun. from 11 - 1. I have boys and they love the dirt bike track. There are two in Cobb. Check out video of some of these places and more info at Welcome to Atlanta, there are LOTS of great things to do with kids that are inexpensive or free!
