Does anyone know the recommended age to bring their kids to the dentist? I thought I had read somewhere that you should do it as soon as they start getting teeth, but I spoke to my friend who is a dental hygienist and the dentist she works for doesn't recommend kids coming in until they are 3 years old. This seems late to me.

if you wait for you child's teeth to get brown and black before taking him to the dentist then he probably already has tooth decay and may have to have the tooth removed. While you might think that it's no problem since they're just baby teeth, your child needs that tooth to provide an adequate space for the adult teeth to come in later on. If he has an empty space there, the teeth will shift, and the adult teeth later on won't have a space and will come in crooked. The dentist we went to said I'd be surprised by how many teeth they have to pull on 3 year olds because of tooth decay.

I've heard that you should take your child to the dentist when he starts getting his teeth and/or before his first birthday. Most parents take their children to the dentist at age 3, the problem with this is that by age 3 lots of children all ready have tooth decay caused by sleeping with the bottle and letting the milk pool in their mouth. Of course if you brush your child's teeth (non-fluoride toothpaste) then you'll prevent this and have no REAL need to take him to the dentist now...but if your insurance covers then I'd still recommend taking him now...that way he gets used to going to the dentist, knows his dentist, and won't feel nervous/anxious/uncomfortable going to the dentist later on. I took my son at 10 months, and it was a quick experience (the just look at the teeth make sure there's no tooth decay) they brush the teeth, apply a concentrated vitamin onto the teeth and that's it. I would definitely recommend taking your child once the teeth start coming in.

around 3 - when they start getting teeth you should start brushing them though, even if you only use a wash cloth -

I've heard as early as 6 mos. however my 10 month old daughter has her bottom two, and the top two are coming in now, we plan to wait to do a cleaning before her first birthday.. We are looking for a pediatric dentist right now, its time to schedule an appt!

I was told that my son should have his first appointment after he had gotten his full set of teeth and, given that molars don't finish coming in until some time between 2-3years for most kids, I would expect three to be a reasonable age.

I have also heard three yrs old. Just make sure you are brushing their teeth. If you notice any problems or teeth are turning brown or black then i would call a dentist but really as long as you are taking care of the babies teeth 3 yrs old is fine.
