I chose it because I was told that the period would cease after a period of time (about 7 mnths or so), and unlike the Depo shot, would not have any unwelcomed side affects like hair loss, weight gain, etc. However, here I am 10 months later, still getting a period every month AND the INCREDIBLY annoying spotting. I said I would give it until my daughter is 1 year old. If it's the same, I might as well take it out, it's almost like getting EXTRA periods (w/the spotting), instead of none!

I have it and I love it. I only had 1 period after getting mine in and it only lasted one day. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. There is one side effect I do like from having it and that is NOT GETTING PREGNANT. Of my 5 kids, 3 were conceived while I was faithfully taking BC pills. I had to try something different. I knew I didn't want anymore kids but didn't want to get "fixed" so this seemed to be the best option for me.

If your doctor told you that there would be no side effects I would recommend a new doctor. I had slight spotting the first year but for 2 years now I am period free! Do research on all methods of birth control..

Even though my gyno was pushing very hard for me to get it, I decided not to. It has been two and a half years since my babe's birth and my periods, up until a couple months ago were still super heavy and I had a ton of spotting. I was also very anemic.

I chose to stick with using the herbs my TCM doc has been giving me the last couple months to help with the spotting and heavy period. Thank God I did. It finally started working and I didn't have to have anything inserted into me.

The whole hormonal thing freaked me out, as well as the potential weight gain. I have to admit, I wasn't sure I wanted any sort of weight gain. I'm already still wrestling with the last dregs of PPD...I don't need to get fatter...that would make me struggle more (I know myself and know it would just get me down).

I am in the uk and had the mirena coil fitted in Dec 2013. Two weeks after insertion I started experiencing severe headaches and loss of limb use ie feeling like a really bad bout of flu. I shrugged it off thinking ok it's my hormones adjusting. I was also experiencing a really stiff neck and funny sounds at the base of my neck like water rushing up (which I have recently found is not a normal thing to happen, again I just shrugged it off). On one particular Sunday I woke up with a really bad headache which lasted all day, and near the end of the day I couldn't even lift the kettle. A few days later my vision in my right eye went. I went to the gp just to discuss unfortunately when I was starting physio for a prolapsed back wall of my womb caused by 25 years of ulcerative colitius. Whilst I was there I just mentioned all the symptoms and was told it was probably a virus. I then asked her to look in my eye and she couldn't find a reflection and immediately sent me to the optician, who in turn sent me to the eye hospital who in turn arranged an mri scan. The little bit of info I have is that the mri showed no tumours. I do not have any of the motor disturbances now but my eye is pretty bad. I have fluid around the optic nerve caused by what. I am still waiting to see the neuro doc with results and what it could be but did do a bit of research myself and discovered that, only in the USA women are coming forward with the same symptoms as me. Even an attorney called JONES AND WARD in Kentucky reported in Jan this year that the mirena and PTC (puesdotumor cerebri) are connected. Puesudotumor cerebri is sort of too much intercranial fluid which causes pressure to build up behind the optic nerve causing Pappiledema. I'm not saying that it is but it is really coincidental not to be. I will post back when I get results, and also another thing, I have started getting bladder problems in as much as withing 1/2 hr I can go at least 15 times, its not like cystitus but is very annoying. I am going to have the coil removed anyway because before having it fitted all I had were painful periods but now my sight could be permanently damaged. Also I must point out that some pharmacutical companies on line list the all the details on the coil and there is a warning for the gp's who fit that if severe side effects occur, I could tick at least four of them.

Hi ladies,
I had the mirena fitted in 2005, prior to the mirena i was happily married (as happy as married couple can be lol) with one child. i had a miscarriage which led me to getting the mirena fitted and the thought of having no periods! i thought it a was god sent. as time went by i started to get depressed, hating myself, my life and my marriage (EX HUSBAND) i was also suicidal sometimes. to cut a long story short , I was 23/24 when i had it fitted, now im 32 divorced...couple of failed relationships because of my mood swings and the thought of being doomed to be unhappy hanging over always....I've moved towns, changed my husband, changed my jobs (many many jobs) went counseling...oh and not to mention my once close family are non existent too as i have cut most of them off (because i thought they may be the problem) basically blamed everyone for my woes except the goddamn mirena till now only recently like couple of days ago i read the horrendous stories of women suffering from all these side effects, Depression, weight gain, smelly discharge all of which i have experienced. i am now having it removed after 8 years...wish me luck as i am scared, dont know who i am without it anymore :''(
PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE MIRENA IT RUINED MY LIFE AND CAUSED MY FAMILY A LOT OF HEARTACHE XX

I have had the Mrena for about 2 months. I have to say, so far I love it. I somehow became one of the vey few who didn't spot or bleed at all. Some cramping here and there. But that's it. I am one who usually gets every negative symptom possible, but somehow this time I lucked out! Also, I've had no mood swings (my problem on other b/c) and no weight gain. I wish you the best in your search for b/c that works for you. I had to try several before finding the right one myself.

I got mine put in after I had my DS (nov 2010) at my 6 week post partum check up. I had heavy spotting and regular periods. After over a year of dealing with this, I finally went in to have it checked. Turns out it was in there sideways! My Dr removed it and put in a new one. That was about two months ago, and I haven't had more than a couple of days of spotting since. I hated it, but now that I got the problem fixed, I love it!

My OBGYN gave me two options, Mirena or Implanon. I chose Mirena first. OMFG (there just aren't any adult terms for my feelings) I wish I'd gone with Implanon first because didn't that damn thing slip into my abdominal cavity and I had to get it removed a week before I moved!

Now I have Implanon and I like it much better. It's been staying in my upper arm like no one's business

I hated mine. I gained 15 pounds with it. My period never stopped. The spotting was irritating. I could feel the strings and so could my hubby. After two years with it, I ended up getting a hormonal cyst with it that mocked pregnancy, had me really freaked out. I had it removed. It works great for some people though.

I have had Mirena since Dec 09 and I love it. I haven't had a period for like 5-6 months. I haven't had any problems with it but a little cramping here and there. My husband doesn't feel it and I don't have to remember to take a pill or a shot every month. I am sorry you are having so many problems with it but maybe if you get it checked out they might find that it has moved or something. I hope everything works out for you.

i LOVE my mirena...it's good at what it does, even if it doesn't take your cycles away completely.

I was one of the women whose periods did cease with it. I used it before the baby and had no adverse reactions or side effects and had no periods. Got on it after the baby, same thing. I do have occasional spotting, but it's very rare. it's just different with everyone, I think. For me, it takes the paranoia and pregnancy-scares out of my sex life, so I think even if I still got the periods I'd stick with it. It's hugely successful at preventing pregnancy without hormonal weirdness and weight gain (I was a basketcase on Depo, and gained 80 pounds in 6 months while on it...never again!). I'm actually LOSING weight post-baby with the mirena, don't even know it's there...it's awesome.

I suggest the nuva ring. I am on it and love it. I can't remember to take a pill every day so this is perfect for me. It's affordable and you only have to worry about it 2 times a month. once when you put it in then 3 weeks later when you take it out. I don't feel it at all, and it hasn't ever come out even during sex. Your body's muscles hold it in place. I would never get any sort of IUD as I don't want to risk etopic pregnancy and miscarriage. I also have no side effects on the nuva ring! Every woman should try it in my opinion!

I had the Mirena. Unfortunatly they had to remove it because it fell into the lower part of my uterus, I dont know how or why, I'm guessing from maybe my fiance lol. I must say it didnt stop my periods it did stop the spotting until before they took it out due to the fall. The Mirena stops periods only in certain people. Dont do it for everyone, wish it did me. I loved not having periods while I was pregnant! As long as it continue's to do the job I'm going to get another placed as soon as they hear back from my insurance company =). Sorry your not happy with it. I'd much rather have this than take pills everyday or get a shot & gain weight or have a ring inserted in my skin!!! Thats just wrong and weird!

I had Mirena put in a while back and I my bleeding stopped. But I started to get a pain on my right side. So I ended up in the hospital. I had it taken out a month ago and now I am going through what numerous women call the 'Mirena Crash'. But, every woman is different and reacts differently to different things. In my case Mirena was not a good match, you know? I hope that everything works out for you though.

I've been on Mirena for 8 months and I was debating going in to see my doctor about it, as I've been having extremely annoying spotting here and there EVERY month! I think I'm getting a period each month but it's hard to tell with the spotting. I do have bloating and cramps each month though. I don't know what to think at this point b/c I'm still breastfeeding and I know this can affect your menstration. I'm not sure if I should wait it out and see if the spotting eventually goes away. I must add, it is very convenient to NOT have to remember a pill each day! Although, I do feel paranoid about the risk of eptopic pregnancies w/ Mirena....yikes! Though, my doctor is actually using Mirena and completely backs it...which made me feel pretty good.

I had my Marena IUD in from Feb - June.. was about to get it out on June 2 and found out I was pregnant on May31st (2yrs ago). My only warning is, even though it is a .05% chance of pregnancy, I was one of the unlucky ones who got pregnant and I knew immediately it was ectopic b/c they are so good at stopping uterine pregnancies. Lost my right tube. Went on the Nuvaring in the 3 mths after this because we didn't want to get pregnant while I healed. After removing we concieved wthin 2 mths.. I would recommend it, but with a warning. Pregnancy can happen and if it does, immediately go in and get checked!!!

My hair has grown A LOT (not sure if its due to the Mirena) but the one thing I am dealing with is weight gain! No matter how much I work out, eat right, etc. I still cannot shake this baby weight! I had the Mirena placed just last month. I was a little worried because I spotted for weeks and had real bad cramping at first but evenutally the spotting ceased and this month th period is pretty normal. I usually have excrutiating cramping with normal period so any relief is appreciated for me. I took pill years back but i was far too hormonal and depressed. Now I have mirena and I dont feel like I am having any emoitonal/harmonal side effects. The only thing I worry about is being able to check for the strings; mine are high up so I dont always feel them. I am hoping that AI am part of that % of women who do eventually lighten or lose their period while on Mirena! Still adjusting to it but so far so good.

At least this way, I don't have to remember to take anything. I am sorry you are having such problems, maybe you could talk to your doctor.
