Rice cereal

[deleted account] ( 15 moms have responded )

Has anyone started rice cereal yet? I think I'm ready to start it, but my son has a cold so I'm waiting until he's over it. Any thoughts?

I started my son on rice cereal at 15 wks and he loves it! I thought if I fed him some at night he'd hopefully sleep longer....But that wasn't the case.

Wow, in New Zealand they say to start sometime around 4-6 months, just when your baby seems to be more hungry or interested in eating. Personally I'm going to try baby led weaning - which is where you just let the baby sit with you for meals and start to pick up foods (fingerfoods) themselves whenever they are ready. There is a good book on this topic if you were to google 'baby led weaning'. I don't think there is any hurry - milk is the best food for your baby, if you give them foods too early they can fill up on cereal rather than milk - and that can have less nutrients. Happy feeding!

Wow - my sister did that, by accident. My neice always sat at the table while the parents ate. My neice really did not take to baby food - but loved to eat soft food off of her mom's plate. She wanted to eat what her parents were eating. My neice ate things like potatoes, slightly cooked carrots, yogurt and fruit that way. She is a very good little eater and likes to try new food. She is turning a year in a few days and has never eaten baby food.

I was talking to the doctor about when to start my 4 month old on ceral... he told me to wait as long as possible, at least 6 months. He said as long as she seems satisfied with breast milk there is no need to give her anything else. By giving her ceral to soon could cause her to have constapation and degistive troubles. So I am waiting until she is at least 6 months old unless she starts needing to eat every hour. Right now she eats a lot in the morning and in the evening but really not that much durring the day

I'll be starting soon as well. My peditrician said to wait until she's drinking 32 ounces a day and is starting to get more fussy or not sleeping through the night (mine's been sleeping through since 2 1/2 months and sleeps 12 to 13 hours). She's up to 30 ounces and gets really fussy in the morning about her bottles

my son has been on cereal in his bottle since he was 6 weeks old due to acid but we were told to give the oatmeal since it is thicker and fills them up more so less likely to want to eat before its time

I have been told by my pedi., the nurse that comes out to monitor my baby's growth, and many other moms that you really don't want to put cereal in the bottle. It's a severe choking hazard. I will admit my son is SUPER messy eating with a spoon but the extra mess is worth the safety issue.

I started mine on it last night. He is 4months old exactly. I just put like a tsp in his bottle with warm breastmilk and he loved it. It didn't help him sleep any better at night though :( I'll probably start giving it to him on a spoon at 5 months. I won't start fruits and veggies til 6 months.

I have always started at 4 months. That is what is recommended. My son is 4months and I started just about a week before he was 4 months. It won't hurt him to start! He won't eat much of it anyway at first he will have to get use to it! Hope this helps!

I have heard a good time to try it is 3-6 months.. I believe I gave it to my daughter close to 4 months. I have only mixed it with formula and formula and apple juice. My baby's dr. said if she gets stopped up to give her apple juice. She got stopped up and wouldn't have a bowel movement so I usually give her a little apple juice with it every time. I would wait til the doctor said it was ok though, My baby's dr. said we could start her on the fruits and veggies..just mixing them up in the cereal, but they said do one food at a time. They actually said if you give banana, do it for 4 days without another fruits or anything to make sure your baby is allergic or has any food allergies to it. I would ask the doctor first just to make sure though..Every baby is different. I've been told though too once they start eating cereal they get big. My baby loves the cereal though. The other day we bought some more apple juice because we ran out and I gave it to her the other day and she didn't like it. As it turned out the first apple juice we got was 100% apple juice which is what we wanted..however this time I looked at the new container and it said 100% juice with punch..My baby doesn't like that kind and honestly I didn't mean to give that to her.. I thought it was the same kind we got last time..Anyway, I just thought I'd add that bit of info.. hope it works out!!! :)

With my first I started him on cereal when he was six months old. I will probably do the same for Nyah. She is doing really well just breastfeeding and I have heard not to start feeding cereal until 6 months. I could be wrong though. My son didn't do well eating with a spoon until maybe 7 or 8 months which is another reason why I am holding off. Glad to hear everyone is having good luck with it!

I started 2 days ago. He is 3months 3weeks and he loves it!! I started with 1 tbsp now giving him 2 tbsp. I BF first then cereal mixed with breastmilk. Its going really good and he is getting it fast, I don't recommend putting it in a bottle, it may be messy with the spoon but he will get it, and its fun anyways :)
