Stress raising Autistic boys

Im a single mom raising 2 boys ( 20 & 21) with Autism. I've been having memory problems the last 6 years, but Drs. Can't find anything wrong. Resently I've had a couple Seizures. Again, Drs. Don't know why. They say it's caused by stress. Has anyone else gone through something similar.

If I were you, I'd see another doctor. I was told for 6 years that my headaches, vomiting, digestive problems, gas, and insomnia were caused by stress. Then, I started losing weight, and my skin began itching. Still told it was stress. Then, my heartrate at rest hit 100 and I was only 26 years old.

At that point, I got a second opinion and it turns out, I had Grave's Disease and it would have killed me within 6 months. Now, I am 45 and very healthy. And I will never ever let a doctor tell me that stress or worry are making me sick. I really don't think seizures are caused by stress and certainly are not something to take lightly.

I have short term memory problems when I'm under more than usual stress of being mom. When my sons autistic meltdowns are violent and often, I forget things. I have trouble sleeping, can't focus, memory loss, and of course panic attacks.

Thanks Diane, I did get second opinion. But results after testing were the same. I'm so sick of it.? Taking anti- seizure meds 2x a day and nobody can tell me anything. I do have depression and ADD. I quit one of my part time jobs because my boss was a pain in the "a--". I was literally having chest pains thinking about what she was going to get upset with next. I'm better now having quit. I miss the job and people, but not her. I was a caretaker for 48 homes, where we live. The position was convienant, cause I could work around the boys ( for the most part). But I just couldn't handle the stress of her anymore and being on call 24/7. I had Neurophycological testing (again) and still nothing. Raising 2 boys on the spectrum is difficult, but plenty of other people do it (with and without help) . I don't know where to turn now. 3rd opinion?

Tina, seizures are not caused by stress. Memory problems can be caused by many things, amongst them depression. Depression can affect many aspects of a persons health, affecting cognitive functioning in a big way. I have not however heard of it causing seizures. Dont rule out that there may be multiple things wrong. Yes, some of your symptoms may be stress or depression but that doesnt mean something else is not hiding in there causing the seizures. I would get a new doctor.

I have to agree with Lisa, in that you should get another doctor. You have clear symptoms of... well something, and they're just passing it off as stress? They should be looking further. And if it is stress they ought to find out *why* stress is causing that much of a problem.

Good luck!

No, but I can imagine how hard it must be :( I'm a single mom raising a 3 and 6 year old. Is there anywhere for you to go for support? Like your local Autism Chapter? Maybe try a moms group? usually has some great groups for moms. They have moms night out, they may have an autism support group etc....

Sounds like you need a break. Do you work also? Is there anyone to sit with them while you go out and get a break? That would be my suggestion. Every mom needs and deserves one.
