My baby is loosing weight what do I do?

My daughter is 15 months old and between 9 and 12 months she only gained 4 oz. Then at 14 months she lost a whole pound. I started her on pediasure and 15 months she had gained that pound back. But she doesnt like to eat. My ped asked me how many she was drinking a day and I said 3. She said 3 is a full days diet so to cut it down to 1 or 2 so she will want to eat more. I did that and about 2 wks later she lost 7 ounces. I talked to the ped again about her weight and she said that around 15-18 months a lot of babies dont want to eat but they dont normally loose weight. We decided to go ahead and start giving her 3 pediasure a day again. She also suggested to keep as many different finger foods in the house as possible. Do you guys have any advice?

*here is a little background on sydni*

She was exclusively breastfed til about 11 months. Then she got maybe 1 jar of babyfood a day but still nursing. Between 12 and 13 months she got to where she would eat 1 to 1 1/2 grilled cheese sandwiches and then around 14 months she got to where she would barely eat 1/2 a sandwich. All of her eating has decreased. (I'm just using the sandwich as an example b/c all her meals decreased like that.) I think she is about done nursing so she isnt getting much from me at all. What do I do?

Hey Darci. Don't you offer meat, chicken, eggs, vegetables or fruits? Your baby should be eating regular meals now just like you do. Even if she's losing weight, I don't believe it's a good alternative to give her more formula. This way, she will feel that she doesn't have to learn to have a good eating habit and that she doesn't have to make an effort into chewing food and eventually feeding her self. Teaching my baby how to eat healthy is a huge concern for me. I didn't want her to be just like me. I used to not eat healthy at all and only look for junk food. All of that because of bad eating habits.
Here are some tips:
-No formula
-Regular meals on specific timings
-healthy snacks of specific timings (fresh or dried fruits cut in medium size)
-no eating during the night
-teach her to only eat on her high chair so she can do what you do
-make her interested in food (creative ways)

Her weight is not a very big issue, so don't worry. But try to establish good habits because it's now or never.

Hi Darci! Is ur daughter a healthy weight? I ask this because if she is within a normal range then I don't think you have anything to worry daughter is now 18 months and her eating patterns and habits are all over the place! She's recently lost a whole pound and I'm not concerned! Babies go thru phases and simple things like teething or learning to crawl, walk etc. can affect their appetites.......try not to worry too much unless ur daughter is underweight for her age?

If ur daughter is already underweight then maybe there's reason to be concerned? Sounds like ur doin everything right though......make sure you stay in touch with Pediatrician!

One last question for you? Are you using the exact same scale each time and weighing her with no clothes or just a diaper? I know even at my doctor's office they have 2 scales and they both read differently?

Hope this helps......good luck!

I would't worry if my daughter was on the lower end of the curve or if she lost weight and then started gaining again, but this seems to be symptomatic of another problem. I have a colleague who's daughter isn't able to eat much. They need to feed her with a tube at night to maintain her weight. I am not a specialist, but I definitely would encourage you to consult a specialist.

I would not worry so much both of my kids Has that problem My daughter is still under wieght but she eats like a horse. My doctor made me go to specialiest about her wieght she told me that i doing everything right. Doctors told me give extra scoop of formala to make her gain wieght i did that once and it made her have upset tummy so i stoped . Also when she was 2 monthes old the doctor had me put baby cearl in her bottle along with my son which is a big mess. I started giving her sold food Like i would make the cearl and add fruits veggies to it on all there meals and i up that and it seem work until now tomorrow i have to go to wic and try to figure out why my son is under wieght for begin two he eats fruits veggies meat milk they both still take a bottle do your best and try not to feel bad just keep trying

These other ladies have some really good ideas. My son lost a pound this summer and stopped growing after he turned 12 months. He jsut rcently started growing again, But to make him gain weight we put flaxseed oil or olive oil on his breads or in his pasta's and even in his pediatric soy drink. He finally gained weight when I started doing that. The reason we used that is my son is allergic to milk protein and the drink he drank was a soy version of pediasure. He also drank 1-2 of those a day. So maybe you can try adding that to her food. :)

i dont think your issue has ANYTHING to do with how long you breastfed your child Darci, some children dont take to eating as well as others.

have you tried noodles with broth? my son was not very big on food until recently and he really enjoys soup and noodles. He also eats well cooked broccoli, rice, fruit straps and other little bits a pieces. Maybe sit down with her at meal times and both of you eat the same thing, make it an enjoyable experience

in my opinion i think you nursed her too long my daughter has been eating solid foods since she was 6 months old and i bottle fed her inbetween she has a great appetite now try things like cucumber and melon this is an easy way to trick them into eating solid foods or give her something your eating their parents are eating.

Try offering food all through the day. Even the less nutritious baby custards or whetever she likes ,if she is plain not eating make sure she has plenty of fluids. My little one picks at food all day on and off. Generally eating 1 decent size meal a day that is dinner. If you think there is more to it like a health problem take her to a different doctor or health nurse. Apples peeled are my little ones fav snack and bananas try those. If she is chewing well enough. Goodluck.

try offering fruits - pureed or maybe pears. try to offer really soft mushy stuff and see how that goes. My son sometimes won't eat textured food and only wants mushy, but is getting better. I always offer finger foods too such as arrowroot cookies, goldfish crackers, animal crackers, etc.

Hope this helps
