They also have some kind of door stoppers, you put it on the top of the door and they make so that the door does not close all the way.

Yes. Mine has also figured out how to lock the bathroom door. She has not, however, figured out how to unlock it. Locked herself in last week. That was fun. You can try to teach her to be careful of her fingers & hinges, etc. My oldest never understood that until she actually squished her fingers & then never did it again. Her little sister is either a bit more cautious or doesn't need hands-on experience to learn it. Ha! Time will tell...

My little girl is very short for her age but she still manages to open the door by stacking up whatever she can find to climb on to reach the handle. Because we took everything out of her room that she could use as leverage she emptied all the clothes out of her draws and stacked them up to reach the handle. Point is - where there is a will there is a way and kids will find it!

The pull down knobs are very easy for kids. My daughter can do both knobs and handles and we havent had issues with her getting hurt. She squishes her fingers in other places like those fan doors for closets and cupboard doors.

Yes, my son has started doing it in the last couple of weeks and always looks so pleased with himself when he's managed. It now means that he can get to wherever he wants if the stair gate isn't closed and he's started eyeing that up trying to work out how to get past it. His sister doesn't help (she's almost 4) as she shows him with endless patience how to get past the safety precautions we put in place which she mastered before she was 3!!

my son has been opening and closing doors for MONTHS now. he's almost 23 months. He has loved doors since he could crawl over to them. I was worried about his fingers at first, but he quickly learned the proper way to open and close without pinching himself...he flattens all his fingers and moves his hand to the center of the door. If you are really worried, there are several things you can get to childproof the doors. You can either get covers for the knobs or handles so he can't open and close them. You can also get something to put in the hinges so they don't shut far enough to get pinched. Either way, I'm sure he will learn quickly.

YES! my son turns 22 months on the 30th, and he has mastered ALL types of door handles. including, but not limited to, the FRONT DOOR. after letting himself outside while i was distracted with his baby sister, we have now installed a deadbolt &chain. he has also mastered the art of moving chairs to get whatever it is that he might "need" above his reach. this is driving me nuts. i ended up taping the chairs to the table after he got into our medicine cabinet...because, of course, he can open child-proof bottles. this stage is going to give me grey hairs.

My daughter is also doing the same thing. she has been opening doors for awhile now. No need to worry they will only hurt themselves once before they learn to keep their hands out of the way.

no worries! my kid does this all the time. she is tall and she is getting more independent. 22 months has been a fun age. she has climbed out of her crib so she sleeps on a futon on the floor and comes in and out of her room as she pleases, opening her door with the handle, rushing down the hall to my room, opening my door and saying good morning! I just ask her to close the door behind her and she does and this is all good. The more opportunities they get to do these kinds of things, the more mastery they will have over their environment and they won't hurt themselves. The TWOS... challenging and rewarding for the SAME reasons!

my daughter can't open doors yet. We don't have the long handles, we have round knobs, and she can reach it, put her hand on it and try to turn but she just doesn't have the force yet to open the door. But believe me she's working on it! LOL

my son is very tall for his age and has been doing this since he was about 12/13 months we dont have any type of door stops and he has never shut his fingers in the door but when the little monkey locks you out of the house iv found it very useful to have a spare key lol

Yes, Logan has been doing that since 20 months. He locks and unlocks the deadbolts too. And does the same with the sliding glass door. There is no stopping him when he is determined to get into a room....

Yeah my son has done this since he was 21 mon. last night was the 1st time he pinched his thumb in the door, luckily he was ok, but he usually can open them and close them without getting his fingers pinched. I think we need to invest in the door knob covers

My daughter has been opening doors from around 14months and has never caught her fingers in a door yet! Unless there are doors that they should not open then I don't see the need to stop them they are learning new skills and learning how to keep safe and judge dangers for themselves, kids needs to positively encouraged not stopped. They make these cute little cloth things.... They're stuffed with rice or sand or beans or something.... And they loop from the handle on one side of the door to the handle on the other side, keeping the door from closing all the way. Keeps their fingers from getting smashed and looks cute instead of just being another hunk of plastic childproofing crap

My BG doesn't know how to open a closed door yet, can't quite get the handle turned...but she sure can close it! I have a walk in closet in my bedroom and she is goes inside and closes the door behind her...she is very careful not to shut her fingers in the door. Kids are resilient and smart.

My daughter does this too.. She started opening the front door about a month ago by herself whenever she wanted to go outside. Gotta watch how fast they learn!

Absolutely! My son who will be 2 in Dec. has been opening doors since he was about 14 months old. I got the little child-proof door handle covers and they have worked great! They sell them at Wal-Mart and Target for around the same price, about $4 for a three pack of them. I would definently say they are a great investment and a must have for parents with young children. I also got a slide/chain lock for the front door as an extra precautionary measure!

Yeah, Aiden's been opening and closing doors for a few months. I know they make those white plastic type door handle covers that you have to grip at 2 points as far as child proofing goes.

I have twins and they learned months ago to watch their fingers. They were constantly shutting doors on each others fingers. But yes...they know how to open and lock doors. Me and their father have been locked out of the house already...lol. good thing I have two....double the chances one of them will let you back in.
