Hi, my 4 month old son has never had a consistent sleeping pattern. He's still in the bassinett in our room. He goes to bed fine, but when he wakes up he will sometimes refuse to be put back into the bassinett and will only settle down on my chest. I tried for over an hour last nigh to get him to go down- waited until he was sleeping and I could pick up his arm and it fell straight down- however each time I laid him down he woke up and started to scream. The last time, (5th try) I didn't even have to put him down before he started to cry and kick his legs. I do not know what to do anymore! We don't want to use the CIO method, plus he's young... any suggestions? Will he just grow out of this? He is going to have to switch to his crib soon and I'm nervous about this! HELP

My 12 week old son does the same in his crib sometimes. Here are some of the tricks I've used that sometimes work: Keep your arm in the bassinet next to hom. My son seems to be more comfortable and quiet down if he thinks I am still holding him. Singing or humming with my arm next to him works too. Trick 2 Give him a bottle in the bassinet. Even if he has fed already, my son gets comforted with a bottle in his crib.
These don't always work all the time. I have to try each one and see what works.
Good luck and hopefully sleep well!

thanks for the suggestions ladies. he slept well last night in the bassinett. I am breastfeeding so he does not get a bottle, but I feed him really well before bed. He's still getting up but that's fine with me. We'll be putting him in the crib soon, maybe he'll sleep better there.

try to dim your lights.... and also lessen the noise... maybe your baby is in his stage when he explores on everyrhing... it si also recommended that he should have his own bed.. if not put him on his crib.... and make sure that you already fed him well....

Have you tried putting him in the crib? he is plenty old enough to put in the crib he may like the open space more. After you lay him down try patting him on the butt so it rocks him. Let him cry for a little bit and see if he calms down. I dont recommend giving him a bottle to put him to sleep or letting him sleep with you. And the Dr wouldnt either. Dont start any habits you will want or need to break later it will just make it harder on you in the future. Does he cry alot at other times could he be collicky. My middle child would do the same thing and she was collicky.Does he spit up alot when he eats? He will eventually grow out of it. Just try different things. Also try to be calm and patient. I noticed when I would get frustrated my collicky one would pick up on it and it would make the situation worse. But it will not hurt and will also be good to let him lay in there and cry for 10 min.(It helps clean out there lungs)

My 6 month old sleeps all night long from about 11pm - 830am... She did the same thing at 0-4 months... Being a single parent I let her sleep with me in my bed for that period of time. He might grow out of it. Just be patient and give him all the extras that he needs. The older they get, it gets to be a little bit easier. Just started her on solids, and I'm having some difficulties with that. Everyones baby is also different. My niece started crawling at 5 months and my daughter is sitting up, but not crawling just yet. So just give him time.

my 18week old sleeps in his playpen in our room, he goes for a 6 hour stretch then wakes up to eat and goes for a nother 4 to 5 hour stretch. But there is some nites were he will not go back down for a couple of hours and no matter what i do he is not happy. i think it has to do with teething, i try gripe water or if i think he is really agitated baby tylonal.
