I'm finding it harder to get my 4 month old daughter to sleep during the day. She used to sleep great up until 2 weeks ago she was sleeping through the night and having good sleeps through the day. Now she wakes 2-3 times a night (settles again after a feed) but during the day she usually wont sleep any longer than 40 minutes then will stay awake for long periods. She's happy enough, I just worry she's not getting adequete sleep.

they tell you back to sleep.. but if you are there with your child lay them on the stomach... i had the same problem with my first child, around 3 months my mother started laying him on his belly and he would sleep through the night and when nap time during the day would roll around he would sleep for at least 1 1/2- 2 hours, I know that secret now for my newest one.. 3 1/2 weeks..

Welcome to my world!!! LOL. My daughter has always slept through (with the very occasional wake up for feed) but has never been a good napper. She's now 4 1/2 mo and if I get her to 40mins that's an achievement!! For my daughter it's important that she doesn't get overtired, so I have to watch her really closely for her tired signs after about 90mins of being awake. It's such a fine line between putting her down too soon and having her fight it versus leaving it too long and her being too agitated to settle. My daughter's just been really sick too so I've had to revert to wrapping/swaddling her (even though she can roll over) or she won't sleep at all.

As for the night-waking, it's very common for babies to re-start this around 4-5 months. It's a developmental stage and as long as she's going straight back down afterwards it's nothing to worry about.

babe i think its normal. for babys around dat age. my daugther wen she was 4months old up to 5months she wouldnt sleep for longer than 15min - 20min. bt wat i usually do is hug her and keep her close and sleep with her.. she usually sleeps longer wen i do dat. you can try.

Hi Kim,

I have a nearly 5 month old son, he has been waking in the night for the past week for a feed which was very unlike him, I went to my plunket nurse and she told me that he is just having a growth spurt and will settle back to sleeping through again. he did last night which was great! Also she explained about babies sleep cycles and that the first cycle is for approx. 45 minutes, they then wake and move into a different cycle, they can often fo back to sleep if left or you can give them a cuddle and they sometimes go back to sleep. Im not sure if that makes sense lol but maybe you could search for 'sleep cycles' and this may help.
