Hammocks vs bassinets

We are having another baby in a few months and need to buy a little bassinet to fit in our room. A friend recommended a hammock type bed and said it helped her baby sleep because of the movement. A sleeping baby sounds good but I am concerned that there doesn't seem to be much back support in a hammock - do they need much? Also I wonder whether the natural movement of the hammock will make it harder to get the baby to sleep when he eventually moves to a cot? Has anyone used a hammock?

I have read about hammocks not giving enough back support, and being unsuitable for longer periods of sleep as they cause the baby's spine to curve (just like how you're advised not to leave your baby in her carseat or sling for long periods of time). If you wanted something with movement you could always go for a small cradle, else a bassinet on wheels that you can push around like a pram?

Also babies do need very good back support, that's why a firm mattress is recommended ( as well as for preventing SIDS). Hope this helps!
