Dear Moms,

After having my second child in April, I am contemplating using Mirena.

Does anyone have any complaints from using it? Have you had any problems with weight gain?

I had the mirena, but my body rejected it. My sister got pregnant also with the mirena. I also have a friend that her body rejected it too.

I had one for about 7 months. I bled heavily the entire time I had it and became anemic. Even with takeing iron.

It was AWFUL. Mood swings, heavy bleeding, pain in my abdomen constantly. Wouldn't recommend it

I had it for about 9 months. I had uterine pains, sharp and stabbing. My period was spotty to none. I was exhausted all the times, like i would be in the beginning of a pregnancy. I always felt bloated. I would have headaches. I couldn't take it anymore. So i had it removed. I chose to try it because i cant even take the low dose birth control pills. I tried the ring and that didnt work out for me either. I did have ovarain cysts before having the mirena, my doctor told me there were little to no side effects. The cysts got much worse after having it. Following the removal, 2 yrs deciding to try for another and then 2+yrs trying to conceive, we finally got pregnant with my daughter. I cant say for sure if that was what caused us to have such trouble to conceive, but i can only assume it couldnt help. Good luck with your decision no matter what it is!

It didn't hurt that much for placement and the cramps were mild for the first week then they got worse and I started spoting. 8months later I made the dr take it out. I figured 8 months of bleeding and painful cramping was my bodys was of says it didn't like it.
Good luck

I had my daughter in April and at my 6 week check up I had the mirena put in.. I havent had any problems with weight gain, but after I had it put in I was spotting for about 3 weeks. And now my periods are very weird.. the period itself only lasts a few days but i spot for about 10-12 days. My dr said that my body will adjust to it eventually. Also, my cramps are still horrible. But i do think its a better idea than the pill

I used Mirena for a while. I did struggle with maintaining my weigh back then but I would say pills were worse. My only issue was that my ob gyn did not tell me Miena had hormones. I wanted an IUD because I was avoiding the use of hormones because they made me gain weigh in the past. But honestly, It was not that bad

I've never even heard of Mirena, but I guess that's because I'm not in America. Oral contraceptives are good enough for me. I've been on Microgynon for over a decade, apart from when I was pregnant and the 6 months I was trying to get pregnant. Went back on it a few months after giving birth, and wouldn't consider anything else. Sounds like nasty side-effects of IUD's!

I had mine put in November and have had no issues at all. When my doctor put it in he said I could spot for a month or so. I am still waiting! lol My bestfriend has one and she spots pretty regular. It just depends on your body and how well it will adjust.

Hi - I had the Mirena before having my first baby. When they first put it in, I had really bad cramps for the first 3 days, then everything was fine. I had it in for about 3 years - I don't think it made me moody (either that or I'm always moody), it didn't affect my libido, and I don't think I gained weight - I was at university/college at the time and eating hot chips every day so I might have gained from that ... but I seriously don't remember. I LOVED the freedom from having it - and will def get it again after the birth of my second (due next week) for a couple of years before having a third (if I can be bothered getting it out/get clucky again).

Good Luck.

I had one after my second child. Unfortunately, only kept it in for 3-4 months as I started getting killer headaches. My drs aren't convinced the Mirena was causing the headaches, but within 3 days of it being removed, the headaches almost completely stopped. I would still recommend Mirena to other ladies, though. I wish I could have kept it in!

I had lots of problems with Mirena. I had headaches, weight gain, low sex drive, i was moody all the time, and sometimes it caused me pain. In my opinion you shouldnt get it or at least explore other options first then ask your doctor what he recommends. Mirena effects each person differently but that is how i was effected and my girlfriends have it and they are all getting it taken out as well b/c it is causing them problems too.

I have had the Mirena in now for about 2 months and while I love the idea of not having to take a pill everyday I hate that I haven't stopped bleeding since it was put in. Well there was a few odd days in there but I am still bleeding now. I still get cramping, its not as intense as it was after being inserted but its noticeable. I see my OB again next month on another issue but this is driving me insane and I may have it removed. My sex drive sucks, I'm gaining weight, I feel myself slipping into a slight depressed state.....

If you can't find the strings you should see your dr, the Mirena can slip up into your uterus and damage you internally. This is one way it can cause infertility.
If you conceive with the Mirena in the iud hormones will cause the embryo to die and pass or be absorbed.
If the embryo tries to find a spot to implant and can't in the uterus cuz the hormones, it might implant in the Fallopian tubes, this is a serious condition and needs immediate surgery, it is painful if the tube bursts but before that happens you might not notice much warning.
If somehow the embryo finds a spot in the uterus where it can implant, usually the baby has life threatening damage done from the hormones, and miscarries.
But some women have had a pregnancy survive the Mirena, and then it's essential to get the iud out asap, one baby was born stillborn with the Mirena implanted in his skull.
Essentially the Mirena will do many many things to keep you from having a baby, prevent one from being made, and then prevent one from surviving.
Thatswhy it's so 'effective'

I had no complaints for the first 12 months, but now it has been infected 2 times in 6 months so it's coming out on monday gonna cost $140 to see a gyno as my doc won't touch it. With the infection I had bleeding for a few days every 2nd week- drove me crazy! I also can not gain weight nor put any on. I have had a rod (inserted in my arm) in the past and boy did I put on the kgs, never again.
Just stick to the pill for me.

I personally can't get it. I am allergic to latex and latex is in it. I haven't seen anything about one of the complaints my friend had with it, so I am posting about that:

She did have weight gain, but the worst for her was that it made sex uncomfortable. Not just for her, but her man, too. It kept poking the tip of his penis "like a needle". So she had it removed.

Just another little issue to add to the rest.

Not at all. I have Mirena and it was inserted after I had my second baby. My baby is going to be five in March and so far so good. Haven't had any problems with it and thank God. You mention of weight gain. Really, didn't gain weight but had issues with bloating sometimes and stomach felt uncomfortable during certian times of the months. not everyday or every month though. I would advise you to sit with your OB doctor and consult with him/her first before making decision since eveyone is different. Above all, I will choose it over any birth control. Like I said, this is my own personal experience. Somebody else's might be different. Thanks

I had mine for about two years. I absolutely loved it! When we decided to have a 2nd baby, I got my period shortly after having it removed.

I have had the mirena for a year and a few months. I don't like it at all!!! I have had several complaints about it. One they say after a year ur pd is more likely to go away. Well for the first two months after i got it i bld for 8 weeks straight the WHOLE time.. Then i stopped having pds for about 5 months ( yeah! i thought!) then i started getting them again and have gotten them reguarly ( kinda) for 8 months now and no sign of it going away.
I have had some bad symptoms w/ it as well. I have mood swings w/ it, my bloating and cramps are worse w/ it. And my periods aren't regular (predictable) The are 24-44 days apart. No normacy at all. I haven't gotten pregnant on it yet but i have read that it is very common and not out of the norm to get pregnant on it. Ur doc will say it is highly unlikly to happen but i promis it can. LIke any other birthcontrol it is only 99% effective so 1 out of 100 women get pregnant while it is incerted. This is a serious matter. It causes a HIGH RISK PREGNANCY with it in. It can cause birth defects , miscarrages and scare tissue in ur uterus( which can cause you to not be able to have anymore children). It can also puncture ur uterin wall and cause you to bld out and possibly have a historectomy.
I also just found out that it really isn't preventing you to get pregnant( as in egg meets sperm). It just makes you miss carry the baby. The egg and sperm can meet and the egg attempt to attact to the uterine wall to grow , attach and then die because the IUD wont allow the nutrients to go to the baby. So if like me, you dont believe in abortion, This isn't the way to go.
My aunt has one and made it sound like it was wonderful. No meds, no pills no condoms.. WRONG...
Its worse!
Take my word for it!
I also can't seem to loose the last 10lbs of pregnancy wt and they say that can also be a side affect of the Mirena as well.
GOOD LUCK and let me know how it goes!
Im sorry to sound so discouraging i just wish SOMEONE would have told me these things before i got mine.
I am planning on getting mine out ASAP !!! ( Im an LPN so i have done a good bit of research on it now )
GOOD LUCK! ~*~

Totally HATED Mirena. I know it works for a lot of people, but I had zero sex drive for the 60 days I was on it after the birth of my 1st baby. I know that's normal after having a baby and BFing, but it was much worse while I was on Mirena, versus before and after I was using it. Only improved when I got it removed. My husband didn't like the way it felt, either. Good luck!

I opted to get the mirena after my first child, who was born last July. I had it put in at the end of September and experienced some bleeding for the first month and a half. It was gross but now it's done and I love it. Sometimes during intercourse I feel like I can feel it if the penetration gets too deep and fast but besides that I never feel it. I haven't had a real period since I've been on it at all but it may be because of breastfeeding too.

Overall I think that I would go with this BC again but the choice really has to be up to you. As many people have said everyone's body reacts differently and you will not know until you get it put in.

I just got Mirena in November after having my last baby. My only complaint was how long I had bleeding. It lasted about 2 months. I have had weight gain, but I didn't associate it with the Mirena. I just attributed it to my poor eating with all the stress I was under having my baby in the hospital with meningitis. Does Mirena commonly cause weight gain? I thought that was more with estrogen birth control and Mirena only has Progesterone.

I am very new to Mirena, I've only had it a month. I had a lot of cramping the 1st week. Some bleeding but the cramps hurt enough to live on ibuprofen for the 1st 3 weeks. Sometimes I got pains that brought tears to my eyes. I thought something was wrong & called my provider & they got me in & checked it. She said the strings were in the right place (I thought they seemed longer) & she scheduled me for a sonogram the next morning (no one was up there that day). They told me it was in the right position & seemed fine. They also told me if I had any other problems to call. A ultrasound tech told me she had the Paraguard & it felt strange to her for the 1st couple of months then it was fine. I'll give it a month or so for my body to used to it & then decide if i want to keep it or get something else. Sometimes I swear I can feel it, but its gotten better over the last week or so.
I was on the Depo shot & started having issues with bleeding. Plus, I was concerned with ostioperosis (family history).
I have spoken to many healthcare professionals about this, and how they feel about it themselves personally. I did a buttload of research between visits. I really want to love it, but I'm still on the fence. Just so you know if you don't like it you can get it taken out & find something else that's for you. My provider also told me about the Implanon. It's the same hormone, but without being in the uterus. And it lasts 3 years.

I just wanted you to know about the cramping in the beginning. I saw that people warned you of bleeding, but the cramping can get pretty harsh. But it has gotten a LOT better after 4 weeks. Ibuprofen helps. O & I'm still breastfeeding, so that was an issue.

I am sure u will get loads of differnt responses about the mirena,
So lets start from here.
I have mirena for about 16 months now, i was so happy to have that inserte, cos i didnt wanna have a nother baby so quick.
the only thing they never told me is you will gain weight, also it depence how ur body is, some woman doesnt gain weight at all and some gain way too much, its really annoying as i am actually bigger than i was while after the birth!
The other things that bothers me a lot is the feeling like u are pregnant, cravings, spotting, and mood swings!
I also suffered from mild depression, had bleeding and pain after intercourse, I am constantly getting BV, and thrush, And funny enough before having mirena i never had those two! I know that mirena is one of the best contraceptions, but if u will decide to have it, make sure that u will get it done but the best dr in your area, as many dr failing to put it in correctly and woman getting pregnant! Sadly most of pregnancies that have started when having Mirena, got very small chances to survive, and usually its getting misccaried, although there were some succesfull pregnancies in the past!

Wish u good luck!

I've had my Mirena for almost two years now, and am doing fine with it. No weight gain, no real periods (they tapered off in the first few months), but I do have mood swings, and I suspect they're around the time I would normally have a period (I've lost track of when my period would be.) Like previously mentioned, it's great that you don't have to remember to take a pill, although you do need to remember to check and feel for the string once a month. Every once in a while I feel like maybe it's fallen out (not that I would be able to feel it), but that's my own paranoia, and with enough feeling around, I still find the string every time.
Honestly, I don't like the idea of birth control in general though; messing around with hormones is a weird game. Once we're done having children, I won't go back to the mirena; we'll probably opt for a vasectomy for my husband. Knowing that it's not forever makes it easier to accept the mood swings!

Mirena is a wonderful thing :) but like all things medical it comes with side effets. But for me the benefits out weigh the risks.
Just the fact that you have it put in and get to forget about it :) is so nice.
The periods are so nice lol weird I know but they last less than 3 days & draw back is that your body still knows you should have a period so every month you still get some cramps but I don't think they are as bad.
I hope you do all the research & get all the info you need :)
Good Luck!!!!

i had it put in and i had alot of pain and bleeding. i went to another ob and she did a sono and the other doc had end up putting it in wrong. she put it through my uterine wall. i had to have my new ob take it out. she tried, but i ended up needing surgery for it. after my 2nd kid i decided to use implanon. it is a little rod that goes into your arm. its about the size of a toothpick. they numb your arm before they put it it. i love the results. you should look into it.

I had it for almost a year. The first 3 month I had a non stop period..well, it did stop for one day a couple times in that 3 month period but that's hardly enough for me to say that it stopped and then started again. I am not sure if i had weight gain...I was about the same weight...fluctuating between the same 5lbs gained and 5lbs lost. I am now 10 lbs less but am not sure if it's due to the absence of BC or change in eating habits. I also didnt like that I couldnt feel the string but after plenty of doctor visits the doctors assured me it was set perfectly in place...I still wanted it out...I didnt like thinking about it slipping or whatever...and my periods wer heavier and longer than they were with Nuva Ring and with the pill. Now that I am not on BC, I have better periods than I ever did with any BC. I will have to use something for BC eventually but believe me, it wount be MIrena again.

I thought about it but I only have one child so far. So I was scared that getting it might prevent another pregnancy and I want at least two. That is just my paranoia, but I was too afraid to get it. My friend had problems after getting hers and she just told me that she gets a period about every month that lasts for two weeks. I'm sure it is different for everyone, though. I decided to get the mini pill (due to breastfeeding), but now, 13 months later, I'm not sure if I want to get a stronger pill or the nuva ring. Just do your research and talk to your doctor.

I've had the mirena for six months. I have no complaints so far. In the beginning you will bleed/spot for a few weeks that's the only thing i've hated about having it in. My period is almost nonexistent only light brownish discharge for a few days. I have cramps right around the time this is about to happen and then none once I acutally start to spot. It effects everyone differently though, some people can have all of the side effects and some experience none at all. You won't know how it will effect you personally until/if you decide to get it. Good luck!

I've had the mirena for almost a year now and i haven't had any problems at all. i haven't had an actually period since march..every month around the same time i will get some light cramps like my pd is coming but then its just the brownish discharge. in my opinion i LOVE the mirena. i haven't had weight gain problems either...mild break outs here and there but the right face wash will help that.

everyone is gonna have their own opinion on the mirena..some like it some dont. it affects each person differently. if you do get it, remember the first 3 months of having it you will continue to bleed and/or have very irregular bleeding, then it will start to taper off.
