Rice cereal??

I've started feeding my 4 month old baby food. But my boyfriend has the idea that he does not need rice cereal. So we've just started on the fruits and veggies. I honestly dont know why babies have rice cereal first. Is it just something thats been around for a while? Or just to get him used eating.

He's doing okay with just regular baby food but I dont want it to hurt him metabalizm or anything like that. Now my boyfriend is very stubborn and I need a "real" reason why its important. If its not let me know too!

Thank you.

i still use rice cereal to thicken foods for my 7 monthold...personally, i want to expose him to a variety of foods for both his pallette and to get his body used to digesting things...i think cereal is a bit more substantial in filling them up....imean, how do you feel after eating only a bowl of veggies?

As far as I know, babies are usually started on rice cereal first because it can be mixed with breastmilk or formula to make it to a thin consistency that makes the transition to eating from a spoon easier. Rice cereal is easily digested and is usually safe to introduce first as few children develop an allergy to it. You also get iron fortified rice cereals that are important around the 6 month mark to replenish baby's nutritional needs.

I think they just recommend it first because it's easy to digest and gets the baby's intestines use to digesting something other than breastmilk or formula. They also tell you start with the same fruit or veggie for a couple of days to make sure there is no allergic reaction to one and it's easier to pin point which one it is. The rice cereal is also fortified with iron so if your baby is breastfeed this is a good way for the baby to get some additional iron. Hope that helps.
