Rice Cereal??

Shonna - posted on 02/06/2010 ( 2 moms have responded )

My son is 2 months old and weighs 13 lbs. I just feel like his formula is not fulfilling his needs. He eats 6 ozs at every feeding, sometimes more. But usually 2 hours later, if that, he is hungry again. Is it bad to start him on rice cereal? How old was your infant when you started them? I know that doctors say that he should start at 4 months, but he is big baby!

It is not recommended to start solids sooner than 6 months (some say 4 months), unless directed by your doctor, such as for conditions like reflux. Starting solids too early has been shown to increase the risk for allergies, obesity, diabetes, etc. Not worth the risk, in my opinion.

It is not unusual for a baby to be hungry again after 2 hours. 13lbs doesn't sound too huge for a 2-month-old either. Whether you baby is big or small is not really an indication that baby is ready for solids. Their digestive systems are just not mature yet at 2 months old. Wait a bit.

my son is 3 months, and just over 15 lbs. at night before bed hes really hungry, so i add a teaspoon of rice cereal to his formula. just make the hole in the nipple a little bigger because the milk gets thicker! it works and my baby seems much more satisfied
