Before you try any kind of "Cry it out" method, which I personally believe to work well (I used it with my daughter and she sleeps great), I would read about how to do it properly. You do not want to put your child in the room and just leave, letting them cry to the point of exhaustion. I thought that "Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems" by Richard Ferber was a great book, as well as "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Marc Weissbluth, M.D. Read one or both before you embark on this. But, as I said, I highly recommend either. My child was "sleep trained" and she is a wonderful sleeper. Also, we do a bedtime routine every night, not matter what. We do bath, bottle, book and then bed. Having a consistent routine helps them to make positive associations with bed time and signals to them that it's time to wind down and go to bed. I think this is an extremely important part of any child's sleep process. Good luck!

It sounds harsh but I would leave him there to cry himself to sleep. Make sure he sleeps well during the day and put him down in the early evening so he can get the most rest. I have a 5 and a half month old daughter and if she wakes up at night I leave her alone and she will fall back to sleep in about 15-30 minutes. It doesn't happen that often, only if she napped poorly, is teething, etc. It will be a rough couple of days, perhaps a week, but will be so worth it for both of you; consistency is the key.
