Spitting problems during feedings

I recently started feeding my 7 1/2 month old son 1st foods. He has been eating rice & oatmeal cereal for about a month now.

We first tried applesause and he made such a funny face I thought he was going to puke! I tried to mix it with his cereal and he just started spitting it out all over the place. I have also tried carrots and he spits that at me as well.

Is he just a picky baby and doesn't like anything he's tried yet or is he not ready to be eating "solids" yet? Is there anyway that I can prevent him from makng a disaster and eat his food?

Thanks for your input!

his age is a good age to be eating foods so no problems there, i started my son at 6 months,. . .what a lot of moms don' t know is that it will take up to 20 times for a child to try a food and actually like it, so you just have to keep trying it. . . it might have been that applesauce was probably tart and he may not like the texture. . .but be careful with rice cereal, it actually has no nutritional value at all and can increase the risk of type 1 diabetis (sp). . .i would just give him oatmeal from now on. . and you don't ahve to give it to him for a long time, my son only had it for about a month (i only used one box) and then i just gave him other things. . cream of wheat is actually really good for them and wic pays for that too, and be careful giving him new foods, let him try it and then wait a couple of days for any reactions and then you can try a new food for a few days and so on and so forth, you might want to let him feed him self if he wants to try it, that will help with him eating more too, i know its a mess but they'll get the hang of it
