My advice to you is don't force it. I have a 5.5 month old and up to about 3 weeks ago, he HATED being on his stomach. he wouldn't mind it if me or my husband put him on our stomach half-way sitting up, but not on the floor or mattress in full horizontal position. he sat up at the age of 3 months and he loved sitting up, but wouldn't lay down on his tummy.

then a little over a month ago, he started rolling over on his stomach and at first, he hated the fact that he couldn't roll back over, so would get really frustrated. but another week and a half-two weeks went by and he started rolling over and actually started to like being on his stomach. i think it has to do with control -- he gets uncomfortable and frustrated that he cant' change position.

you also have to remember that at 4 months, 5 minutes is a LONG time on the stomach -- he's at the age when he's starting to like moving around, looking around him, reaching for stuff and being on his tummy limits all that. plus, his head is really big & really heavy compared to the rest of his body, so it's really hard to support it. he can do it, but he gets tired quickly.

also, not all kids crawl -- some sit up, stand up and start walking and never actually crawl until later in life. that's just the way they develop and it's considered perfectly normal. so don't stress if your baby doesn't want to be on his tummy. maybe he wants to be upright so that he can have full control of his hands & arms and so that he can be like his mommy & daddy :). after all, i don't think you'd want to lay on your stomach with limited mobility for much longer than 5-10 minutes either :). Good luck!

I get down on the floor with my 3 month old for the first bit, and play with him a lil , using a mirror and some musical toys to calm him, he likes it, but i have to watch him because sometimes he nuzzles his head into the mat! and i have to move his head to one side!

my daughter is nearly 3 months are thankfully she loves tummy time.
though i didnt start her doing it on a play mat... mostly cos didnt have one.

we have a build in chase on our couch and i just put her on her tummy up there. i think cos its a bit higher and she has a better view of things she likes it more. i just have to make sure i sit with her incase she rolls over.

My son hated tummy time too. We tried toys, a tummy time mat, playing with him, and nothing worked, he just cried and threw a fit.

He ended up getting plagiocephaly (a flat head) because of this and has to wear a helmet for 3-6 months.

I also had to take him to physical therapy, where I was told to leave him on his stomach until just before the point of total frustration/meltdown.

His physical therapist showed me how to teach him to roll over. Once he figured that out he rolled around to get everywhere and now crawls and pulls himself up (all within the last two months) and loves tummy time.

You pretty much just have to keep trying and even let him cry a little. He will get used to it and eventually enjoy it.

My son hated tummy time too, so we would do 5 minutes at a time 3 or 4 times a day until he got stronger and didn't mind it so much.

my daughter didn't like tummy time either and i mean at all not even my tummy time mat would help so i kinda didn't do tummy time with her because it upset her so much and then on day on one of those rare occasions when i would put her on her tummy she rolled over that was about 4-5 months and now at 8 months its like a light switch went off in her head and now she rolls over when she don't want to be on her tummy or vice versa depending on what she is doing. all you can do is just keep trying if for lil bits at a time and my daughter only like being on her tummy on a bed or couch something really soft so maybe that is the issue.have you tried tummy time on your bed??

Our daughter HATED tummy time at that age too. The play mat did not work for her. Just try to entertain him on the floor for as long as he will tolerate it. I used to lay down with her and hit the rattle on my hand... it's all about the noises!!!!

Once our daughter was actually able to move around on her own a bit better she didn't mind it so much, so just hang in there!

I have a 4 month old son as well. Who hates to be on his belly, too. I bought him a little play matt has a little pillow on it, that just pushed his arms up a bit, which makes it a little easier for him to be on his belly. At this age they love noisey toys. Sit down in front of him and play with em. Good luck! I know its hard.

Hi Megan :)

My daughter Ella is 4 months too and I lie on my tummy with her and pull the usual funny faces, sing songs etc, and have lots of toys and things lying around her mat so she has lots to look at. Also, when she starts to get frustrated, I switch her around so she's facing a different way. Not sure why but that seems to work! Hope that helps :)
