My 3 yr. old is terrified of anything related to fire safety.

My daughter (3 yrs) started preschool this year. Last week they did the first fire drill with her class. The next day they had a fireman come speak to the class. My daughter had to be picked up before the fireman even came. She arrived at school and started screaming, which continued for almost 30 mins. until the teacher called me to come get her. She is fearful of the fire drills and the teacher has suggested that she not participate in the drills. I want her to be empowered to know what to do in the case of an emergency, but she is really terrified. I have begun checking out books from the library for her about firemen and fire safety in the hopes of exposing her to these topics in a non-threatening way. I really want her to know what to do. If we have a fire at home or at school, i want her to know that the firemen are not scary. Any other suggestions?

Do you know any firemen personally? My children all loved it when I took them as toddlers, down to the fire station to meet the firemen, the fire chief, the fire engines, see the sliding pole etc -- firemen are usually awesome with kids and the ones at our fire station usually have candy in their pockets and share their fire helmets -- maybe if Daddy took them or a trusted male friend -- and HE put the fire helmet on and played around for a bit and made her laugh? just suggestions --- best of luck
