When Photography Became an Important Part of My Life

As a little girl I was obsessed with cameras. My parents and grandparents bought me countless disposable ones until I got my first real film camera around age seven or eight. I took pictures of everything. My siblings, the neighborhood, even my shoes. Then as I got a little older photography faded away. It wasn't until I became a mother that it came back full force. Taking photographs of my children wasn't just snapping a picture — it was capturing a memory. That took my love of photography to a whole new level.

What Makes a Great Family Photo

I have a love of artsy photos. However, that being said, I believe candid shots are always the best. Everyone wants a great shot with every face smiling at the camera, but my eye is always caught by the photos that don't feel staged. The ones where you can feel the moment is real and see the emotion between the people.

A Tip for Taking Photos of Kids

Jokes. Always, always, always have something that will make them laugh. Don't try to pose them too much. Put them in the general area you want and just start talking to them. The more comfortable they feel the more likely you'll score the winning shot.
