What's the best thing about having teens?

Are the teen years harder or easier for you than the baby and toddler years were?

While both have their challenges, I believe that the teen years are harder than the baby/toddler years.
Teenage children are trying to assert their independence while still craving the support and attention of their parents. Peer pressure, hormone changes, fitting in, balancing homework, activities, and a social life put stress on a teenager. unless they are open and honest with their parents, it can lead to poor choices, depression, lack of self confidence, etc.
As a parent it is difficult to find the balance between providing structure and smothering your child. Teens need rules, responsibilities, and structure in their lives. They also need freedom to be independent and make their own choices. Finding this balance can be difficult.

Do you think it is better to be a teen today than when you were a teen?

There are pros and cons to both. I think that while technology is amazing, it can be extremely dangerous for teens.
Having an open, trusting relationship with your teen, regardless if it was in 1987 or 2012 is the basis for a happy child.
Is my kid going to make bad choices, lie to me, and do things that I don't approve of? Of course she is. But, as a parent, I strive to keep the doors of communication open, allowing my teen to talk to me without judging her (on the outside) and offering advice when necessary. It's not easy to keep my big mouth shut a lot of the time, but part of growing is making mistakes.
