What's your favorite vegan or vegetarian friendly product?

My favourite vegan product is the Mile High Brownie from Kelly's Bake Shoppe. It's the absolute most delicious, satisfying "healthy" sweet treat. Not only is it vegan but it's also gluten free which makes it that much better!

What's the biggest misconception people have about being a vegan or vegetarian?

The very first question I always get asked when people find out I am vegetarian is where do I get my protein sources from? People automatically associate animal meat with protein and it's unfortunate that there isn't enough awareness about the variety of healthy, plant-based foods that are out there that can easily satisfy a balanced diet.

It's quite possible to be a vegan or vegetarian and maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet. It's definitely more difficult and requires a bit more creativity but I can honestly say that I have had more delicious, mouth-watering meals with plant based products than I ever enjoyed with animal based foods. Hello QUINOA!

What's your best tip for families who want to start living a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle?

My best advice is to start slowly. Make small changes - one step at a time. It's not something you can do overnight. I would probably tell people to start with vegetarianism before heading into veganism because a vegan diet is definitely more restricted than a vegetarian one. Start with going meatless one day a week. Choose that one day where you ensure you don't consume any animal meats. Before you know it, this has become a habit and you don't even think twice about it.

Then I would go one step further and eliminate another product. So if you've given up red meat to start, then perhaps the next step is to quit the white meat. Or if you've given up all meat altogether, then the next step would be to eliminate the dairy.

The importance is doing this in stages. People tend to get excited when they want to make a change and dive in the deep end. If this is going to be a lifestyle change then that is not the approach you want to take. Slow and steady wins the race here. Being a vegan or vegetarian isn't a phase. It's a lifestyle choice - so before you make that choice, be sure you educate yourself and arm yourself with everything you need to help you succeed. Knowledge is definitely power.
