What's the biggest misconception people have about single parenting?

That it's almost impossible to do. But although it is wrought with challenges, it has rewards. Families can be whole with one parent.

What's the most rewarding thing about being a single parent?

The quality time I get with each of my 2 children. The one on one relationship has improved with single parenting. My kids are grown now, so I speak about the teen years. I was not a single parent when the children were babies. Although my husband traveled a lot, and I had no family in my home town so I certainly felt like a single parent some of the time. It was over whelming at times and I have so much respect for single moms who have done it since their children were babies.

What's the most important thing being a single parent has taught you?

To rely on myself and to stick to my promises. Without a fall back partner, I had to really mean what I said and discipline was important. The children's father was involved after my divorce however, he worked toward devaluing my role. Unfortunately that made it even more difficult than it should have been. I believe lots of women are going through this after their divorce. Husbands that suddenly are possessive of the children pose a whole new set of problems.
