Evolved Mommy

Evolved Mommy is mostly nonsense peppered with useful tech tips and trends for over-worked, over-commited moms (and dads) who don’t have time to reinvent the wheel.

What's your favorite kid-friendly app?

My three-year-old daughter with discriminating app taste absolutely loves playing Mickey Mouse Road Rally on her iPad. The game has story elements plus interactivity that is spot on for a pre-schooler.

What tips would you give a mom who wants to become more tech savvy?

Do not reinvent the wheel. Ask your friends or other bloggers who seem to know what they are doing. But, in that same spirit, always be available to help others. For example, your tech-savvy friend may want to learn how to knit or how to be a better writer or how to take great photos. When you get help always pay it back or pay it forward.
What we know is our currency.

What's the most innovative gadget for children you've seen?

Hands down the Nabi 2 tablet. As an Apple family, it almost pains me to recommend an Android tablet, but this little thing is amazing for kids. It comes in a seriously tough case, pre-loaded with 200 apps, and you can put it in "mommy mode" to use it like a regular tablet all for $179. To get the tablet, case and apps on an iPad could cost you around $800 or more.
In our home we just handed down my original iPad to our daughter when she turned two, put a Tech Candy case on it and created a couple folders with her favorite apps. This isn't the best solution, though, because we don't have complete parental control.
For example, she likes videos of kittens on YouTube, but more than once we've opened what looks like a cute video of happy kitties and what starts as an innocent video ends in a scary zombie image at the end or similar.
