We're a family of five (with one on the way) that attempts as much travel as possible on the bike. We live in Lexington, Kentucky and ride our bikes year round.

What do you like about the biking lifestyle?

The biking lifestyle is a slower pace than buzzing around in the minivan. For us, that pace offers time to connect as a family and enjoy one another. And with three kids (and one more on the way) it's hard to keep those little minds occupied all day. Riding the bikes gives them plenty to see and do while spending time together.

How often does your family bike versus drive?

It all depends on weather for us. We live in a small town outside of Lexington, Kentucky. It's small enough to get everywhere by bike but large enough that we have everything we need to fill our evenings and weekends. It's entirely possible for us to go the entire weekend without getting in the car. But foul weather becomes a factor pretty quickly. If you don't plan well, you'll end up hopping in the car out of fear of storms pretty quickly.

What’s a good safety tip for biking with children?

I'd ride all your routes without kids a few times before you bring them along. Each road has it's own nuances that need to be learned without the mental strain of pulling your kids along. Once you're comfortable with a road, you'll be in a better state of mind to bring your kids with you.
