In what ways is Northern California unique from other places you've lived or traveled?

We love Northern California because of the diverse geography and climate. I have never lived in a place where the temperature can change 30 degrees within 20 miles! It is such a beautiful place from the beaches, wine country, redwoods, lakes, and mountains. This just feels like home.

What outdoor activity do you enjoy doing most with your kids?

We have been spending more time lately in Lake Tahoe. We all love to swim, play on the beach, hike, bike ride, and enjoy the wildlife.

What's a great Northern California destination for a family vacation?

I really have three. San Francisco is a wonderful place to visit. If you live in the Bay Area, you should explore the many different neighborhoods. This summer we explored Coit Tower (my first time), the Golden Gate Children's Park, and the Cable Car museum. Of course, I love Lake Tahoe in the summer and winter. It is less busy in the fall and spring. Northstar at Tahoe is our favorite ski resort. My other favorite destination is any place on the ocean. There's nothing like grabbing a blanket, picnic lunch, and some sand toys to reset your day. It forces you to slow down and enjoy nature.

What is your favorite quick breakfast recipe?

We eat a gluten-free diet so we I have to be a little more creative in the kitchen. I can make this breakfast, a gf egg and cheese quesadilla, in about 6 minutes. Place a brown rice tortilla in a toaster oven and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Set to toast and keep a close eye on it. It's done when the tortilla turns golden brown and the cheese is bubbling. Remove from toaster oven immediately and place on a plate. While the tortilla is toasting, scramble the eggs. Heat a small non-stick skillet with 1 teaspoon of butter to just below medium. Crack 2-3 eggs in a bowl, add salt and pepper and whisk. When the butter is bubbly, add eggs to pan and wait 20 seconds. Start moving the eggs around the pan with a rubber or silicone spatula. Eggs should be done in about 1 minute. You can leave eggs slightly wet; move pan off of heat and wait another 20 seconds. The eggs will continue to cook. Add cooked eggs to one half of the tortilla. Fold over and cut in half. Serves 2 children or one hungry adult.
