What's a tip for celebrating a holiday or milestone with your kids when your partner isn't able to be there?

We utilize technology as much as possible. We have an infant girl and while she's too little to realize what she's missing, my husband is the one who had a hard time missing things while he was away. Buying a smartphone was the best decision we ever had; I can instantly send him photos and videos, and we can even video chat through the device. It's important that he feels included in our life even if he isn't physically available to be here.

What have you learned about parenting from living in different places?

I've learned that, especially with oversees assignments, a village really does raise a baby. Family isn't just a plane ride away, and things are just different in other countries, so having a good group of friends is vital.

I know it's easier to say than do, but don't be afraid to ask for help and say yes when it's offered; the benefits are so worth it. When my husband was deployed I tried extremely hard to break down my pride and admit when I needed help with something (getting the lawn mowed, help taking out the trash, etc.), and every time I asked, people were more than willing to help. With a new baby, it's sometimes hard to leave the house—especially with your partner away—I had a few friends come to us just so I could have a little break and socialization with someone other than the baby.

What are your best tips for traveling with kids?

We took our daughter on her first road trip when she was just two months old and my two biggest tips are to be patient (babies are unpredictable, so allow ample extra time to deal with feedings and diaper changes) and go with the flow (an over-booked schedule will become very stressful in a hurry, so keep plans open and build in some extra fluff time).
