What's the best part of raising a family in Canada?

Canada is a beautiful country... from the east to the west coast... and we are a country where individuals are proud to say they are Canadian. Je suis Canadien!! We live in a country where we have our freedom and for that I am thankful for that every day! I also celebrate Canada's incredible diversity. It allows society, which includes our children, to learn about different ways of life... different ways of seeing the world. As a special needs parent this is so important, as our society, in comparison to a lot of other areas in the world, is doing a pretty job of 'learning' to be more accepting of those that are differently-abled.

What's the biggest misconception people have about raising a family in Canada?

As Canadians we have been given the huge stereotype that we live in a country where it is cold and snowy all year round. I remember one time someone asked me if we looked out the window would we see polar bears walking down the street? Not generally something you see in most cities across Canada. So as much as we love to be out in the snow... building snowmen, making snow forts, skiing, skating and tobogganing this is not something that we do all year round... it's usually only for about 4 months (give or take a little) out of the year. Besides that... after an afternoon of skating or skiing, there is nothing better (though we don't do it that often) than a steaming hot bowl of 'poutine' and a Tim Horton's coffee! Now, that's Canadian!

What do your kids love most about living in Canada?

My son, I know, enjoys the fact that we have four distinct seasons and all the amazing things that go along with that. It allows us a great deal of activities to do as a family. From the cold winter months to the warmth of our summer there is always something fun and different to do... though he would tell you what he likes best... always... is being able to play frisbee with his service dog, Ollie. And now, as I look out the window today I see that we need to be heading out to rake up some leaves - and what's the best thing to do once you rake leaves? Why jump in them of course!
