What's your favorite affordable outdoor activity to do with your kids?

Our favorite activity is hiking with the kids. I love trail running, and my husband is an avid mountain biker, and we take the kids along with us on trail runs and bike rides, but our favorite is hiking, especially when we can take our time, discover secret hideaways, examine rocks and trees and animals, and just talk. Walking side by side is one of the best ways I know to really talk to one another, to connect in ways that you ordinarily might not.

What tips do you have for spending time outdoors when its cold?

I'm a big believer in layering. You can always shed layers as the day warms up or as your body heat increases. With kids, I think the promise of hot chocolate beside the fire when we come back inside is an added bonus.

What's a great vacation destination for families that want to spend time outside?

We live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, so we're surrounded by terrific hiking, camping, running, skiing, and mountain biking. Asheville is a great place because it has a ton of interesting things to see and do in terms of cultural arts, historic sites (The Biltmore House, Grove Park Inn, Thomas Wolfe, Vance Birthplace, etc.) , and there are more places to visit in the great outdoors than you could possibly cram into a single vacation. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are also beautiful as is Wilmington and Southport and the surrounding beaches. Away from home, one of our favorite family trips was to Bend, Oregon. We did a lot of hiking, mountain biking, running and caving while we were out there, and the kids got to see Mt. Hood and participate in an Oregon Trail re-enactment camp for school children. It's a very cool place.
