What's the biggest misconception people have about single parenting?

I think the biggest misconception people have about single mothers is this notion that we don't have "real" families." I take great offense to that preconceived idea that my family isn't real because it consists of me and my daughter. I've had people say, "oh it's only you two?" Our family is very real and I think other single moms probably feel the same. We provide our children with loving, stable and nurturing homes just like any other 2 parent household. We instill values and morals and provide a good foundation for our children. My daughter and I sit around the dinner table just like any other family. I know that some other single moms who are Christian really struggle with guilt about not having a traditional family and that is part of the reason I started my blog. I want other mothers, especially moms of faith to know that it is okay, you can provide your children with spiritual foundation and every bit of of love that a two parent family provides. Does having a one parent household come with it's challenges? Absolutely, but so do 2 parent households. I hope all single moms out there realized that they do have 'real families,' and it is up to them to create the family they want.

The other misconception is that single moms must not be happy because they are always working so hard to provide for their children. This is so untrue! Most of the single moms I know are very happy and content with their lives. Being a single mom is a challenge, but being a mother in general is the hardest job around! But, it is so rewarding! Most single moms work hard, but it is for the most precious gift... their children, those incredible beings that God blessed us with. It is my experience that when a woman is happy within herself regardless of her marital status that happiness spreads to every other area in her life.

What's the most rewarding thing about being a single parent?

The most rewarding thing about being a single parent is the unique and intimate bond that I have with my daughter, Anya. I love all of our adventures, talks, traditions, and quiet moments we share together. I probably learn more from her than she does from me! She is always imparting some wisdom to me that I'm grateful for. There is this wonderful autonomy that comes with being a single mother, that I actually quite enjoy.

Being a single mom has taught me how resilient, brave and capable I am. I never knew my inner strength until my daughter came along. One of the most rewarding things I've experienced is the strengthening of my faith. I've learned to truly be dependent on God, he is my real partner on this journey.

When I look into Anya's beautiful little face I am reminded that she is depending on me and it makes me want to do better and be better. She changes my life every day and delights my heart in a million ways!

What's the most important thing being a single parent has taught you?

The most significant thing that being a single parent has taught me is that I have a bigger purpose. Before Anya I was always searching for my purpose, always wondering what I was supposed to do with my life and then she came and it became crystal clear. It was like she opened this doorway to my real self. Suddenly, I knew that the most important thing that I would ever do in my life is raise this little girl and to do that I had to rely on God and trust in his will for my life.

Ironically, it has also taught me to not be afraid of depending on others. I am fiercely independent, and cringe whenever I have to ask anyone for anything. Being a single mom has taught me that it is okay to need others. Relationships are vital to a single mom's survival. It does take a village to raise a child and it is very important to create your own little village for yourself and your children. I have a great group of friends who are single moms that have been incredibly supportive and loving to both myself and my daughter. I also realized how important family is, I can't begin to tell you how supportive my parents and my brother are and the significant roles they play in Anya's life although they are four hours away. I've learned that I'm loved in the most extraordinary way by God, my family, friends, and my daughter. I learned that I am not alone in this, not in the slightest.

Does your family have a special tradition for Easter or Passover? Please share a link to a picture along with your response.

Chere Williams

Easter is one of the holiest if not the holiest days and I really want my daughter to understand the significance of why we celebrate the resurrection of Christ. So, last year I threw an Easter party that included egg decorating, a brunch and an egg hunt but also incorporated the story of the resurrection that each girl took part in. In plastic eggs were scriptures and little symbols that told the story of Easter. It was one of my favorite parties and a great way to talk about the significance of Easter.
