What's one of your favorite new books for children?

I love the Justin Case series by Rachel Vail. My son and I read it together and laughed aloud. It is about a 3rd grade boy and hits so many of the dilemmas students face in elementary school.

What advice would you give to a mom who thinks her child has too much homework?

I would look at your at-home homework routine first. Is your child getting interrupted often? Is there a special area in your home that is conducive to completing school work? If all is set up correctly at home, then approach the teacher.

Ask the teacher to explain the time expectations and amount of work that a typical child receives on a nightly basis. I had this happen to my son last year. When I spoke with the teacher, I realized my son was completing all of the optional work too! The teacher gave free reading and math assignments that needed to be completed over the course of the week not each night, It made a big difference in our workload!

What's one of your favorite educational activities that can be done outside the classroom?

Cooking with kids is a great way to reinforce math skills like measuring, adding, and time. Cooking teaches process and order (first, second, last). There is also a lot of science built in when you watch bread rise or ice cream freeze.
