6 month old will not take a bottle... HELP!

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

Hi all! My 6 month old son is exclusively breastfed and I have no desire to start on formula or pump and bottle feed. My questions is this... has anyone else had a problem when they had to be away for a couple of hours and their baby would not take a bottle? I have an event I have to go to and I'm contemplating having someone drive him up every couple of hours so I can step out and nurse him. He will not take any kind of bottle. I've tried Avent, Playtex drop in with the latex nipple and Dr. Brown. I've got some pumped milk in the freezer I would like to use for him. Did anyone else have this problem and what did you do? Thanks so much!!

You can have the caregiver give him milk in a syringe - like the kind you would use to give liquid medicine. It takes a long time that way, but it works. Also they can try letting him sip from the edge of a regular cup. My son was not keen on bottles either!

Boy have I had this problem.  My daughter, who is now 11 months old, has never accepted a bottle.  I went back to work when she was 7 months old and it was horrible at first.  She would hold out all day and be starving.  She has since started taking a sippy cup and does ok with it.  She still prefers to nurse and if I am around really only plays with her sippy cup.  I would keep trying and if he really won't suck on a bottle try a low flow sippy cup.  Tricks I have heard to try and get babies to take a bottle include having other people give it  liek your husband or grandma, etc.   Don't just warm the milk, but also the nipple as well.  Try giving it to him when he is sleepy.  Make sure the milk is really warm, not tepid.  Unfortunately, although I tried all these things they did not work for us, but most people I've talk to say they did.  Good luck!

Well I am not much help as I tried every single bottle possible and my son never took a bottle. He's almost 26 mo now. But, we did start introducing a sippy cup. Soft ones. We started more around 8-9 mo w/breast milk and he didn't really start to get it down until about 1 yr when we started putting water in them instead. But, you could give this a try now w/warmer BM, and hopefully others who have been successful will have tips.
