My 6 week old son won't open his mouth to latch on properly, therfore I can't seem to produce more than 1 oz every 2 hours. I am having to supplement with formula after each feeding. i thought he would catch on by now but he's not. I've seen a lactation consultant and had her help with latching but I can't get it right at home. I am determined to get it right....he nurses then I pump while he takes a bottle....every 2 hours!

Here is a tip fro my lactation consultant:

Feed him 1 oz. of formula before you breastfeed him. That way he won't get into the routine of thinking that first you "play" at the breast and then you get fed. Good luck! I would also highly suggest taking 1 capsule of shiatervi 4 times a day to get your supply up. This was something my lactation consultant gave me when I lost some of my supply. It's over the counter and she said it always works.

My son had trouble once we got home from the hospital as well so i totally understand. A good thing to do is get in contact with Lalache League, http://www.llli.org/ they can give you so much help and some of them will come to your home to help you. I know that using a silicone shield worked for my son. Get in contact with them I promise you they can help!

Hello! My son was 9 weeks before he started latching properly. Try to make sure that his mouth is wide when you feed him. Also what I found that worked is to make sure that he's really hungry before you feed him. Just hang in there...it will get better. I had to go to a lactation consultant and it was so easy to latch him when he was there, but when I was home, I had problems.

Don't give up, and it will pay off in the end!!
