Like Amanda said they can breath through their mouth when they are born, but think that I remembe my doc saying that arond 2-3 months (I could be remembering incorrectly) they will breath through their mouth and their nose instead of just their nose! I can imagine it would be unconforable for a newborn with a cold if they couldn't breath through their mouth, so I think that's why the trate is picked up ealier on in their life. Babies can breathe through their mouths as soon as they are born provided their airway is clear.
