BF Whilst TTC

Hi ladies,

I know BF is not a contraceptive, but does anyone know if it can prevent me from getting pregnant?? I'm currently BF my 19month old daughter & just started TTC. Thanks

Jayde, since your periods are regular and strong, then bf should in no way stop you from falling pregnant. Just have regular intercourse on your most fertile days, which I think is about between days 9-18 of your cycle.

My obgyn said if periods are regular then you are completely fertile! So Eric was bf at least 7 times a day when I got pregnant. I know many moms here who conceived while bf, Jodi, Lisa, Emily, Sara, and many many more who talk about tandem breastfeeding.
It took us 4 cycles to conceive once we stopped using the diaphragm so I think if I could do it you can too! especially with me bf round the clock and you only twice a day!

Breastfeeding typically doesn't hinder the ability to get pregnant in and of itself. However, breastfeeding can cause irregular and infrequent menstrual cycles, which can make TTC a bit more complicated. If you're having pretty regular cycles, however, that shouldn't be an issue. Or you could just have sex every other day and odds are, you'll get pregnant ;)

My midwife told me that bf is about 80% protection so there's always a chance!

even thought you are getting peiods your ovulation can be a bit erratic while BF, i was still BF my daughter and was able to concieve, mind you she was 16 months old and we had been trying since she turned 1, my cycle didn't start again until she turned 1. but no 1 took 6 months to concieve and this one took 4-5 months and she still BF's a fair bit

has anyone gotten pregnant before their period has started again? Im interested in knowing about conceiving while BF'ing, I know that it isnt a contraceptive, however, I havent seens stats on whether they have had periods or not, I';d say if your period has returned you are more likely to than if it hasnt returned..

I've heard that night nursing and frequent nursing are two factore with breastfeeding that can decrease your chances of getting pregnant. If your daughter is still waking up to nurse during the night, your body might interpret that as "ok, this mother is still caring for a young child" and it's a natural way of spacing pregnancies so that it's healthiest for the mother and her body isn't overworked. But if your child is 19 months old and eating plenty of solids in addition to your breastmilk, not waking up to nurse during the night and your period has returned then I'd say your chances of getting pregnant are pretty good.

My own mother was still nursing me when I was 14 months old and that's when she got pregnant with my sister. She was only nursing me once in the morning and once before bed at that point because those were her favorites and she couldn't give them up. Thanks Mom!!!!

What is TTC? I have been breastfeeding for 10 1/2 months and haven't gotten a period back yet. I am on Micronoor as well as I am not quite yet prepared for another pregnancy. I haven't heard of many people getting pregnant while breast feeding during the first year but have heard lots of people get pregnant after that. Good luck!

It can, but its not impossible. If your period hasnt returned, you can see if you are ovulating by tracking your basal body temperature or buying some ovulation kits. My son is 17mo, bf and I just found out that I am pregnant (yay!) Best thing is, we only started ttc 6 weeks ago. My period had not really returned either, I had only had a couple which were irregular. So good luck and hope you conceive soon!

Hey not sure if it will help, but i also think it depends on the person, but i never conceived my second child until after i stopped bf...the month i stopped i got pregnant with my second. It can possibly prevent if from happening, it just depends on your body as there are women who can conceive while bf :)
