Birth weight

Does anyone know when a baby usually doubles their birth weight? And does that vary whether they are on BM or forumla? I heard they are supposed to triple their birth weight in one year, not sure how true that is.

My doctor says they are supposed to double the birth weight by 6months. My daughter was 7lbs at birth and 12 lbs at 6months. It was very frustrating for me though because they don’t use a different chart for formula fed and breastfed babies. Obviously, a formula fed baby may way more because of all the fillers in formula. They were always saying my daughter was underweight and they didn’t like that she was in the 3rd percentile. I thought it was absolutely ridiculous because they were pressuring me to supplement with formula. My side of the family is very slim and small boned. For her body type, she is perfectly healthy and happy, despite what the number say. She is 21 months old now and weighs 21lbs., exactly triple her birth weight and they still think she is on the small side. Look at her picture, those cheeks aren’t starving. Of course it’s not her main source of food but I still nurse her. She's never had an ear infection and only one cold. As long as your baby is eating regularly and you know you have a good supply than I wouldn’t worry about it. If a baby is not getting enough food, they will let you know. Bigger isn’t always better. Good luck! : )

prior dr's would say expect babies to double around 6 months and triple around a year. To be honest I haven't heard a Dr say it in a while.
It is not precise as to the day as most people can attest too.
Progress in weight, height and head circumference are the measurements they take at each check up and they should be growing in all ways in addition to mental and physical abilities.

My daughter doubled her weight by 7 months, and then basically stunted for a few months... she still at 6 years old barely weighs in at 40lbs!! My son on the other hand... he is 5 months and weighs in at just under 20lbs and 30 inches long... so he more than doubled his birth weight. Each child really is different, so I would say that if you have any concerns about the weight of your child to speak to their doctor.

My son was 6lbs 10oz when he was born, when we left the hospital he was 6lbs 1oz. (he was born 10 days early) Now he is 6 months weighs 22 lbs and is 28 inches long. My son more than doubled his birth weight around 3 months and I strictly breast fed him, now he's on solids as well as breast milk.

It all depends on how much the birth weight was. Mine was 4.15 so he doubled quickly, my nephew was over 8 pounds so he was much, much older when he doubled his weight. As long as they are healthy and growing I would not worry.

as long as they are gaining weight steadily you shouldn't worry. And i too have heard about tripling their weight by the first year. both of my kids however, were not true to that "rule". My son was 7 lbs 4 oz at birth and 19 lbs at 1 year, my daughter was 6 lbs 14 oz and only 17 1/2 lbs at 1 year. They weren't premies and always ate well. Since they gained weight, albeit slowly, and were reaching their milestones on schedule my ped. and myself were not worried.

one thing is for sure regardless of when they double or triple their birth weight - they get big FAST!!!

my son is 3 months old and has doubled his birth weight. from what i understand between 3-4 months is good age to double birth weight.

My son is 14 months and was 8lbs 2oz at birth, at his appointment today he was 18lbs. So definitely not triple his birth weight.

My daughter is almost 5 months and has just about doubled her birth weight - but she was 8 pounds, 2 ounces at birth.

I heard they triple their birth weight at 1 year and it worked for my daughter. I am not sure about when they double it though.
