hey moms

i need to get my daughter onto a bottle to supplement to help her gain weight she has cystic fibrosis and needs all the help she can get! she is 7 months old and only 10lbs ( she was born at 5lbs 13 ounces). i still want to breast feed but my milk is just not cutting it she needs more calories. she is already on baby food 3 times a day. i just want to supplicant an extra bottle or two a day to get more calories into her while continuing to breastfeed. hears the problem..she hates the bottle. she screams at the sight of it and refuses to take it. i have tried 6 kinds of bottles various kinds of nipples someone else trying to give it to her, apple juice, water, my milk, formula and nothing works!! any tips?! im desperate!

thanks
ashley

if she needs more calories, cut out the solid food for a while (or at least reduce to 1 or 2 meals per day). at 7 months, 3 meals a day is a lot even for a baby who is gaining weight normally. when you compare breast milk to baby food, breast milk has WAY more calories. solid food will keep her fuller, longer but it provides fewer calories, and less fat.

I don't really use the bottle too often, but when I have to pump and feed to go out, I do. I use the First Yeas Breastflow. They work great!!! They are a good price too.. you can get a starter kit at Walmart and Target (just to name a couple places ) Try to have your LO stay latched on longer to get the fatty milk goodness of breastmilk and try to co-sleep. The beginning of your milk is more of a watered down sweet milk and then once the baby gets past that as they eat they get to the richer, fattier milk :-D Best of luck!!!

Try a sippy cup, my daughter never took to bottles but started using a sippy cup at 5/6 months (when not BFing) and has always loved it and done well with it. Good luck!

At 7 months, she's old enough to use a sippy cup on her own or drink from a regular cup that someone else holds for her.

I also wanted to add..... The very first time I gave the breastflow bottle to him he didn't know what to do with it, but I just squeezed the nipple and he went to town :-D Hope this helps

breastflow bottles are highly reccommended for bf babies and work wonders. look into em. you can find em cheap on ebay. there is a type of formula high in calories for babies struggling with weigh gain such as similac neosure.
