Breast feeding and regular milk?

My son will be a year old this Sunday. I'm wondering how much/how often I should give him regular milk. He still bf primarily but he loves solid food too. I have no intention of weaning any time soon. We're leaving it up to him. I'm just wondering if like once a week or so in a little sippy cup is too much or not enough. I wouldnt be using it to take place of nursing (again, I'm not wanting to stop nursing, the milk he is getting from me is better than anything else) so would I just use it during snack time? Or should I just wait all together, until he starts to wean himself? Any suggestions would be great. thanks.

My son was one last sunday! We also share your breastfeeding plans. My son has 4 feeds a day. If I am away and miss one of his day feeds (maybe once a week / fortnight) he has a sipper cup of cows milk. If he only has a small feed because he is distracted I may also offer some cows milk in a cup. So maybe 4 sippercups a week max I would say he has. He prefers water in his sipper cup to be honest, which he goes through A LOT OF! Our little boys sound very similar. Hoep yours is a cute and funny as mine! Hope the bday goes well! Sound like your doing just fine.

I started offering a sippy or open cup with cows milk at dinnertime only once my kids were interested. Milk is just another beverage, not something special nutritionally :-)

Hey Shaina! My son is 14 months this Sunday and we still BF. I also worked with kids for 8 years doing infant stimulation/development. I don't think there is a one size fits all with this, so be prepared to try out different ways until something fits for your son. One suggestion I would make is try one sippy cup a day of 2-4 oz and treat it like a snack, or add it to a snack (he may just throw it like my son did or only drink a drop or two- which is fine). Just be very cautious about what kind of milk you use, and remember that dairy, especially milk, is constipating so it may help to increase his fiber (prunes and pears are great). I always encourage my parents to look into Goat milk. You have to follow your instincts as a mom and know you'll make the best choice for you and your son. Remember too its a process, so don't stress over it:) Good luck!

Personally, I am not introducing cow milk until Phoebe is nearly weaned- she is 17 months now. We are doing baby led weaning so she nurses on demand, rather frequently. She didn't eat solid meals regularly until 13 months (her grwoth certainly didn't suffer! breastmilk is awesome!) At her 15 month check up, our doc said it was fine to hold off on cow milk. Once a week in a sippy cup sounds just fine to me. He may not even like it for a while- simply offering it to him should be great.

no you are on the right track with your questions. start him off with just a little regular milk at snack times just make sure to brush his teeth after like you do when he bf
