I'm 16 days postpartum. My twins are in nicu and were born at 29 weeks. I have been pumping since they were born. They're on donor breast milk which is good but I still only get about 5ml per pump (both breast combined)
my breast never grew during pregnancy and they've never been swollen since I've delivered. My breast dont hurt neither do my nipples and I do massages, hand expression (no milk) drink a lot of water, take fenugreek, eating well, sleeping well, pumping after kangaroo care and everything else I've read.

I thought I was doing ok but all the other nicu moms are bringing in full bottles 3-4 full bottles. I'm still using syringes.

is there anything else I can do that I may not know about? I'll do anything. I have always wanted to breastfeed and its getting upsetting that I'm doing so bad. Thank you in advance!

Hi Sarah i had a similar issue with me producing milk for my daughter who was also in the nicu when she was 7 weeks early. I have noticed since i have experienced luck producing more after I have tried different pumps, the ones from the hospital work wonders but once you get a pump it might be tricky to find one that works but if that doesn't work try putting your breast into warm water and try to eat some oatmeal while pumping also try and drink not just water but other drinks like milk,Gatorade, and NO CAFFINE at all. the one thing that has been workin for me is to use a manual pump like from avent or there other brands but it has helped me. Also you dont need to compare your slef with the other moms every women is different. keep trying and dont give up!!!!!!!! hopefully this might work best of luck and congrats on your two little angles. :)

Read this article from Kelly Mom.

It is possible that there is a glandular issue such as not having enough milk ducts. It's a pretty rare condition, but it does exist. Also, have you ever had any surgery on your breasts? Reduction or enlargement? Surgeries can damage milk ducts and make it difficult to produce enough milk.

And as Julia said… don't compare yourself to others. Added stress will not help you make milk.

I'm glad you're able to use donor breast milk. Just remember that any amount you do pump is good for your babies. Try try try not to stress about having a full supply. I can't say it enough that stress can and will hinder your supply.

Thank you for your response. I have not heard no caffeine!!! Eek! I've been drinking tea and soda! I will stop immediately and add some oatmeal and Gatorade. I use the hospital pump when I'm there but still get a very low supply. I will keep trying and thank you again :)
