hi all. my baby boy is just over 4 months (18 wks) I am still breastfeeding well but it seems that my milk has gone funny, lol i mean sometimes its there n sometimes its like my son don't get enough out of left or right breast, so i have to give him a 2 oz bottle of formula just 2 stop him crying (screaming) then he has my breast agian n after a few mins it seems to come tro, but if i don;t give him bottle then all he does is scream, which is not good bless him. i have 2 other children that's at school, i bf them both but doing this for longer as i had a very traumatic birth.
sorry its so long but i wanted to explain best i could thanks :)

Don't look at baby's behavior to judge if he's getting enough. The best way to tell is by diaper count. As long as he's getting 6-8, he's fine.

I'd also get rid of the bottles for a few reasons:
-giving a bottle interferes with supply and demand. If you give a bottle, your breasts don't get the signal to make milk. The more you nurse, the more you make.
-your breasts are never empty. Think of them like factories, not storage units

Is the crying a new thing? If it is, I wonder if it could be teething? It could also be a growth spurt. Growth spurts can make babies fussy

Its probably not your supply that is the issue if you are drinking plenty. Babies cry for a multitude of reasons. Sometimes they need to burp during the feeding or can be tired and want to sleep or even needing a nappy change. And your little boy could be going through a growth phase and is feeding more so that your body starts making more milk.

Feed more frequently (on demand) and drink at least 3 litres of water each day. Allow bub to suckle for as long as he wants and once he has finished feeding put him back on each side again to get that little bit more milk.

By topping up with formula your milk supply will adjust and decrease. Also express before you go to bed and keep this in the fridge/freezer for the times that your supply seems low, usually late in the day. If you really want to increase your supply express in between feeds and your supply will increase. If you feel like bub hasn't emptied your breasts in a feed (usually after the first feed of the day when you are usually the fullest) try expressing add to the feeds where he is looking for more.

If all this fails you can get a herbal treatment at the chemist called fenugreek which helps with lactation and you can get treatment from your doctors as well on script and these do work.

Keep in mind that your body needs the raw ingredients for lactation, ie rest, water, calories, good diet and stimulation by your baby.

Before trying supplements let your babys weight and urinating be the judge. Best of luck!

And give yourself a pat on the back your doing a great job. Don't stress, that doesn't help.

Squishy breasts=working breasts. That "empty" feeling is what you want.

Yup, nurse on demand and your breasts will produce plenty for him! As long as he's getting plenty of diapers, you're great!

Since the crying is a new issue, i'd say growth spurt, teething or a combo of both!

hi Celeste thanks for replying, no crying is not new, yes i think he is teething as he is sucking his fingers n anything else he can get into his mouth lol, he has not had a bottle today he has just had me all day n eve, sometime my breasts are so full they hurt cos he sleeps for 2/3 hrs other times he don't seem 2 be getting any out, its so hard to know if my breasts has any there or not. He is brill during the night only wakes for 3 feeds, cant get a better baby lol, its just during the day thats a problem sometime, but like i said today is the only day he has not had bottle n he seems to have slept better during the day, whereas b4 he would not settle till i gave him a bottle then boob again. i don't wanna stop bf as his my last baby due to very bad birth n complications during birth, his very lucky 2 be here so am i lol. again thanks for the advice i will try to stop bottles n do more bfeeding, so if i start bf more will my milk come in more as his getting older will he need more breast milk? just worry i am not giving him enough. his nappy's r wet n he has several poos. my r breast seems like there is hardly any there as he has it then starts to cry after about 10 mins so i swap boobs to satisfy him, which seems to be working but i wanna get r boob like my left, there is so much in that one he sometime coughs cos it comes out so fast n lots lol :) is there anything i can do 2 help milk come thro better on my r boob?
