dealing with thrush

I just noticed that my nipples are bright red and sore after feedings and the baby has patches of white in his mouth. I know from my older children that he has thrush. I haven't taken him to the DR yet. My older son's thrush went on for 2 months even on the nystatin. I am trying an herbal remedy. and Gentian Violet. Has anyone else used this? Just looking for advice. I haven't gotten to the point where I am in tons of pain during his feeding and I don't want to jeopardize our breastfeeding future.

Hi! We used Gentian Violet and it worked well for us. I was also prescribed Jack Newman's nipple cream and I did take probiotics. Just be careful with the Gentian Violet... it stains!! The best part about using it is you can feel relief right away. I certainly did, though I did get on it right away.

I found it best to paint it on my nipples with a Q tip. You can also dab it on the spots in baby's mouth. I did this for the initial treatment and then just let him get it off my nipples when he fed.

Good luck!! Thrush is miserable!

Washing my family's clothing in vinegar gave me an itchy acidic for my skin. I have heard the violet works well, also you can take Probiotics, or just eat a lot of yogurt. I really hate yogurt, so I drink GoodBelly. I have also heard you can take grapefruit seed extract. Both the probiotics and the GSE are for you not baby, though he will get benefits through your milk. My son got an awful yeasty rash when he had thrush and another mom on this forum recommended I use California Baby Calming Diaper cream which worked like a charm. It has lavender and tea tree oil which are both anti fungals. VERY diluted lavender water on your nipples will help them and not hurt baby. You can also put small amounts of yogurt on your nipples after feeding.

Jeebus, if it works for you, let me know! We're on our 5th round of diflucan now!!

And I have read that putting vinegar on your nipples, as well as washing burp rags or anything else that touches baby's mouth, is a good way to get rid of yeasties. (edit: or monitstat on your nipples. Midwife told me I didn't have to clean it off before bf'ing, but I did anyway, because that's kind of icky.)

But srsly. If the gentian violet works...

(I almost typoed genetial violet, which would've been hilarious if I hadn't caught it.)

I suggest you take the baby to the dr to get the medicine so there fore the soreness and the white patches in his mouth would go away.. My daughter had that and in less of a weeks time it was all gone. Yet my daughter is still nursing just as good,
