I was BF my 22 month old while pregnant, but month ago we stopped all together, not even because there was too little for him and he didn't like the taste, but because I was in extreme, excruciating stabbing pain when he was latching and sucking. Is this normal? I've never felt pain like that, even at the beggining when he was a newborn. They are still very sensitive and painful when I touch them and we stopped BF a month ago. I don't see any other symptoms of trush, but could it be? Is there a way to get rid off trush while pregnant?....

Thanks Lori good to know I'm not the only one. I just could not believe the pain. Even today my son tried to suck a little bit and i swear I almost dies from the pain...

I also weaned my first when I became pregnant with my 2nd. It just hurt way way way to much. My oldest was 23 months when I weaned her, and luckily she adapted pretty well. I was just starting to think I had an infection or something because of how much it hurt every time she nursed, and it had never hurt that much even in the first week of nursing or during newborn growth spurts. Turned out, no infection I was pregnant. Weaning definitely gave me some relief, but I was still very sensitive throughout the entire pregnancy.

Thanks Sara. It is good to know that someone went through something similar. I just couldn't do it....this pain was soo horrible to me that I just couldn't take it. I will definately talk to my midwife. I don't even know if it is thrush, it just came to my mind because of this horrible pain, but maybe that is just a side effect of pregnancy. I don't know how you did it, I had teras in my eyes and screamed every time he latched. I became scared every time he said boo boo? That's why I cut him off :( and I feel so sad :(

My nipples hurt like hell with both pregnancy. I nursed through the second one. It was extremely difficult and we cut way back on nursing. Even with my first pregnancy when I wasn't breastfeeding I couldn't even let water in the shower hit my nipples. I'm sure you can still treat thrush while pregnant. There are natural ways to treat it including probiotics and rinsing your nipples with vinegar. Check with your doctor/midwife to see if that's what it is and how you should go about getting rid of it. It's very possible that the soreness is just from the pregnancy.
