Foul smelling urine in my breastfed baby?

Maybe this post isn't directly related to breastfeeding but since my daughter IS breastfed, I thought I may as well, since this is such a helpful community. :) Just a short while ago my almost 11-month-old daughter had a foul-smelling diaper and I told her siblings (2 yr old brother and 5 yr old sister) with a laugh, "well Laura's got a stinky diaper, let's go change her!" Imagine my surprise when I open the diaper and find that it's BM-free; it was the pee that was so stinky! What on earth?? She eats table food and/or baby food about 3x a day now, and still nurses about 4-5 times a day. This is a new thing, not a regular occurrence. Could it be something she ate? Or could be she be coming down with an illness? What would be the most likely cause? Thanks for any help. :)

Ok Dianne...... ther are two things it could be..... ONE if it happened MORE than the once, she may have a bladder infection..... TWO: theres a good chance she just passed gas into a wet diaper !!! which for whatever reason THOSE SINK SOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD !!! i dont get why wet farts smell sooo much worse then dry ones.... my daughter is 29 mos and still catches me by suprise every now and then with a wet fart diaper....

it could be a bladder problem as in an infection OR she might not be getting enough flouids. If she is on table food do you offer her water as well? She might be dehydrated as breastmilk is good for thirst but if she is having solid food as well then there might not be enough fluids in her system to help process the food. Try offering her cooled boiled water at meal times and see how you go. Good luck

my 1 year has a foul smelling odor when she urines.. I took her to the dr yesterday and they tested her urine and of course it didn't have the same foul smelling diaper smh.. I breast feed my daughter at night and in the morning.. She woke up this morning and sure enough that smell was present smh .. I will call the dr again.. this is so not normal smh...

Hi t here Dianne, we've had that with my son but he's much older nearly two when it happened. We took him to the doctor to rule out infections, which i suggest you do. Some nappies can do that at times i've found, plus if they've been on antibiotics, multivitamins or not had enough fluid to drink during the day. Best to be safe & rule out illness first see your doctor!

If the color of the pee is normal, then it's very possibly something she ate. Or if she's on antibiotics, ohmygosh those make the pee smell horrific. If it happens time after time, I'd check with a doctor, or if the peeing seems to hurt her.

certain foods that either you or she eat can cause urine to smell, but my biggest concern would be a urinary tract infection. I quick trip to the doctor is probably the best idea
