I had a Mirena IUD put in and a month later my milk supply dropped a bunch. Went from lots of milk to pumping just to feed during the day. Stopped exercising, took Fenugreek and drank lots of liquids for two weeks....didn't help, so got the IUD taken out. Waiting to see if my supply increases. Anyone experience something similar?

I had a Mirena IUD placed at my 6 week postpartum appointment and my milk supply decreased shortly after. My milk supply was great before the IUD. I quickly used up my freezer stash and was supplementing with formula after every feed. I could only pump about a half ounce at a time from both breasts. After about 5 weeks of suffering (eating lots of oatmeal, pumping after every feed, taking fenugreek, more milk plus, domperidone), I got the IUD removed and within a week my supply had improved. Now my baby is 4 months old and my milk supply is almost back to where it was.

To Fallon : I had the Mirena put in 4 months ago, for about a month a spotted every day the second month for 2 seperate 3 day streches and after that once a month on my "normal" time of the month i have 1 day of spotting so it looks like I'm going to be one of those people that loses thier period all together (fingers crossed). Hopefully you have a similar experience, \

I think this might not be a normal side effect..I've had mine for about 2 months..and I'm still nursing twins exclusivly..but I am having all kinds of break through bleeding..wondering if that will ever end...

A week later my supply was up 25% and now I'm back to normal...it was the IUD!

I don't think it's very common so I wouldn't worry. I'm waiting to see if it really was the IUD.

I got mirena put in 6 weeks post partum and I didn't have this experience at all. If you want some info on getting your supply back send me a message. I would be glad to help.

Oh my gosh I hope not..i'm nursing twins and got my iud about a month ago..my ob assured me that the hormone in the mirena is progesterone or whatever and it's actually supposed to raise your milk suplly but the small amount in the mirena is so little that it only pretty much stays in your uterus..now I'm nervous..there's a Rx drug that should restart your lactation but can't remember what it's called..
